Extra-Inning Fireworks Push Maryland Past UNCG, 17-9

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Maryland put up 17 runs, its highest total since a 21-8 drubbing of Indiana on April 5, 2015, and beat UNC Greensboro in eight innings to close out the Carolina Classic.

Taylor Okada went 3-5 at the plate, adding 2 RBI and increasing her season batting average to a team-high .448. Taylor Wilson and Regan Kerr knocked in three runs each, and Anna Kufta went yard in the most explosive offensive outing of the season for the Terps.

The Terps started just as hot as they finished, scoring four runs in the first to open up the game. With runners on scoring position, an error scored Brashear, then Younkin singled to center field and scored Kufta. Regan Kerr then doubled and plated two runs and gave the Terps the early 4-0 lead.

UNC Greensboro had an answer, however, and scored five runs to take the lead in the bottom of the first as Maryland cycled through Galvan, Main and Golden in the pitcher's circle.

Golden proved dominant in the circle for the Terps, sending the Spartans down in order in the second and holding them scoreless for several consecutive innings, but Maryland couldn't get much offense going either until the fifth inning when a Taylor Wilson three-run homer gave the Terps the 7-5 lead.

With the game on the line in the bottom of the seventh, UNCG scored two runs to force extra innings.

Maryland's offense exploded in the top of the eighth inning and relentlessly scored 10 runs on seven hits. With international tiebreaker rules, Younkin was placed on second, and she quickly scored on a Gracie Voulgaris single. Okada then hit a 2-RBI single, Brashear hit another RBI single, and a Kufta two-run homer stretched the Maryland lead to 14-7.

Down two outs, the Terps scored three more runs to extend their lead to 17-7 and eventually a McRae groundout ended the inning. UNCG hit a two-run homer to cut the deficit to eight, but their comeback efforts would fall short as three outs in three at-bats ended the game.

The Terps play their final tournament on the road next weekend at the Stetson Invitational in Stetson, Florida.
