COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland head coach
Michael Locksley chatted with the media after the Terps second scrimmage of the spring on Saturday.
Opening Statement:
Today's scrimmage was one of those typical second scrimmage days. Last week I left the field and felt like the ebb and flow, it was pretty evenly matched. But today the defense really stepped up and recorded turnovers. The second defense, they really stepped up and made strides. They played with energy and effort, showed a lot of effort and leadership over there, and kept it throughout. They created some turnovers which I loved. The offensive side, it was a lot of start and stop. A penalty on first down, big play, penalty on second down. One of the things we've preached from the day I've gotten here is good teams don't beat themselves. But the penalties, the turnovers, the drops, we actually helped our defense. The defense did a really good job, but the offense, we turned it over and the margin of error was really high. But the great thing about football, what I told our team is, there are days the defense will have to carry the weight. The offense, we just have to make sure we don't hurt ourselves and ability to win. And then maybe make some plays on special teams. But there will be days where our defense will have to hang on and our offense will have to score a bunch of pointS. But, today, our defense played winning football and our offense was very inconsistent.
On Leadership:
We've been pressing to find guys who can have a positive impact on their teammates. I see a lot more of it on defense, maybe because some of those guys are a little more mature and playing with confidence. But on the offensive end, the natural leadership position is at quarterback. And right now those guys are trying so hard to learn the offense, I don't see that kind of leadership from them yet. They're all trying to learn and do things the right way. There are going to be times when bad things happen, but you can't be hanging your head and things like that. We have to be a team that plays the next play and forgets about what just happened.
On Potential Leaders:
Johnny Jordan is displaying the leadership I'm looking for,
Ayinde Eley has shown great leadership,
Tino Ellis,
Ellis McKennie has shown up. We're starting to see some guys have a positive impact on their teammates. But it's a lot like rain drops. It takes more than one. One rain drop evaporates, but when they come together it becomes a puddle. It becomes a force.
More on the scrimmage:
I thought the second defense really stepped up. I also saw the second offense was able to move the ball against the first defense. They were able to drive, score touchdowns and kick field goals. I felt like we got better from last week; that was the unit that needed to take a jump from last week.
On Recruiting Fans
I have a vision in my mind of what Maryland football should look like and I know the potential of it. I was here in 2001 when we had some success in
Ralph Friedgen's first year. I remember looking up in the stands when we played Clemson to tie for the ACC championship and the place was packed. I know the potential of what our fan base can be. Obviously we have to do our part as a program and football family to put a product on the field that our fans want to support. But I just came from a place and had the opportunity to see how a fan base can help a program. And I've been here when it's been that way. So there's no doubt my vision is to get our fan base and program up and running to the high level it was before.
On Jaelyn Duncan
The big thing is there's a load of talent and potential there. He's adjusting to the speed of the game. The offensive line position is the one spot where you can't rush the maturation process. Things happen so fast and quick inside, on the interior of the line. There are times we see flashes of his potential – great feet, balance, body control, mobility. But then there are times when [defenders] move on him and he doesn't see things in certain protections. Those are the growing pains of throwing a young lineman out there, but he's giving us the effort we want.
