Terps Top Penn State, 5-2

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Maryland baseball team defeated Penn State, 5-2, at Medlar Field Friday evening.

What to Know

  • The Terps took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third and never gave it up behind a solid start from right-hander Hunter Parsons. Maryland's ace tossed seven innings of two-run ball and scattered five hits while striking out nine and walking three.
  • Maryland took the lead in the third. A Caleb Walls single and AJ Lee double put two on for Randy Bednar, who hit a sac fly for his 40th RBI of the year. Senior Taylor Wright then hit a single over a drawn in infield to score Lee.
  • The Terps added another run through the Lee/Wright connection in the fifth. Lee singled to the shortstop before Wright laced a double to right-center to plate is fellow senior infielder.
  • After a pair of Penn State runs in the fifth, the Terps responded with two in the seventh. Walls reached on a dropped third strike and eventually came around to score on a failed pickoff. Michael Pineiro, pinch hitting for Josh Maguire, scored Bednar with a two-out, two-strike bunt for a hit.
  • After Parsons exited, lefty Sean Fisher tossed a scoreless eighth, aided by a pretty 6-4-3 double play turn from Lee, Benjamin Cowles and Maxwell Costes. Senior righty John Murphy notched a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his eighth save.

Other Stuff

  • AJ Lee has reached in 17 consecutive games, which ties Maxwell Costes for the longest streak by a Terp this season. Lee is also riding an eight-game hitting streak and has five multi-hit games in his last six games. Kid is raking.
  • Wright padded his Big Ten lead with his 18th double of the year in a three-hit day. Wright is now t-13th in single season doubles in Maryland history and would tie four others for ninth all-time with his next double. Wright is 10 off the school record of 28, set by Ken Noe in 1991.
  • Parsons notched his Big Ten leading eighth win of the season. That number ties him for third in a single season in Maryland history with nine other players. The number was most recently notched by Tyler Blohm in 2017. His 15 career wins is tied for tenth in Maryland history.
  • Murphy's eighth save makes him tied for fifth on the all-time single season saves lead. He is one save away from tying Kevin Mooney's 2013 mark of nine. Mooney holds three of the top four single season save marks in school history (13/2014, 11/2015, 9/2013) while Brett Cecil also had 13 in 2006. Murphy's 13 career saves are fifth in school history.
  • Connor Newcomb, noted play-by-play man of the Maryland Baseball Network returned to the booth after missing the last four games after getting his wisdom teeth removed. Connor said he needed to get his face iced after the game, but he fought through the broadcast with the class and professionalism that are his trademarks. What an inspiration.
  • Chris Alleyne became the first player in college baseball history to rock double oven mitt gloves on the base paths (UNCONFIRMED).
  • Guess what, we are playing another doubleheader.

Up Next

Maryland will play, yes, ANOTHER DOUBLEHEADER at Medlar Field beginning at 2 p.m. The Terps have played Saturday doubleheaders in all four Big Ten series now. Crazy. Both games will be shown on BTN Plus. Maryland Baseball Network will have the coverage for both games as well, via the MIXLR App. That's the MIXLR App, M-I-X-L-R. (Spelling is FUN!)
