On June 18, 2019, the NCAA announced the conclusion of a negotiated resolution with the University of Maryland regarding Level II violations within its men's and women's basketball program committed prior to spring 2018. Once these violations came to light, Maryland Athletics began a thorough, cooperative investigation with the NCAA Enforcement Staff.
The NCAA recognized the proactive and corrective steps the university immediately took when the violations were discovered. The details of the violations and corrective actions include:
- Women's basketball: Recruiting materials used were printed on too thick of paper and some materials shown to recruits were personalized beyond NCAA guidelines. As part of its self-imposed sanctions, the women's basketball program incurred recruiting restrictions and the reduction of one scholarship each year from the 2018-2019 season through the 2020-2021 season.
- Men's basketball: Violations within the men's program pertained to coaching versus non-coaching responsibilities of a member of staff. A previous 6-game and 15-practice suspension was imposed during the 2018-19 season for an assistant coach. As part of its self-imposed restrictions, men's basketball reduced their countable activities by one hour per week during the off-season and two hours per week in-season during the 2018-2019 season. The NCAA has imposed a two-year show-cause order for the assistant coach, who is required to attend the NCAA Regional Rules seminar in 2020 and 2021. There are not any restrictions on his coaching duties.
- The Athletics Department has been fined $5,000 and the men's and women's basketball programs will be on a one-year probationary period. The probationary period does not include any restrictions on regular season or post-season competition. The probationary period will end July 18, 2020.
Maryland Athletics will continue to robustly educate and monitor to ensure adherence to our core values and hold ourselves to the highest standards.
