Maryland Athletics Announces Senior Leadership Additions

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland Athletic Director Damon Evans has announced two additions to the department's executive staff, naming Brian Ullmann as the Executive Associate Athletic Director/Chief Strategy Officer and Mark Sherburne as the Senior Associate Athletic Director/Administration. 

"The landscape of collegiate athletics requires us to match innovation and strategy with a disciplined approach surrounding our core mission to support the academic, athletic and developmental success of our student-athletes," said Evans. "With broad experience across athletics, both Brian and Mark will provide excellent insights that will help grow and advance our mission. Their addition to our leadership team will allow us to prioritize delivering excellence across our department with a unique focus on the underpinning strategy of our entire operation."

Brian Ullmann Named Executive Associate Athletic Director/Chief Strategy Officer

Ullmann will be responsible for formulating, communicating, executing and sustaining strategic initiatives focused on accelerating athletic department performance through cohesive strategy planning and execution. In his role, Ullmann will serve as a key advisor to the Director of Athletics and will be responsible for the administrative oversight of External Operations, Development and Communications.

A 1992 Maryland graduate, Ullmann has spent 14 years of his 25+ year career in roles at University of Maryland on both the campus and athletics side, serving as Associate Vice President, Marketing and Communications for the University from 2010-17 and the Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Operations for the Athletic Department from 2004-10. Most recently, Ullmann served as the Vice President, Marketing and Communications for Rare, a global conservation organization. 

Ullmann graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism in 1992 and currently resides in Arlington, Virginia. 

Mark Sherburne Elevated to Senior Associate Athletic Director, Administration

As the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Administration, Sherburne will provide daily support to departmental leadership, facilitate strategic priorities and special projects, streamline policies and procedures and help identify efficiencies that enhance productivity. In addition to serving as a sports supervisor, he will provide oversight of assigned units and facilitate the training and professional development program for staff. 

Sherburne has an expansive career in collegiate athletics spanning over 25 years, including serving as the Director of Athletics at Lock Haven University and fourteen years in various administrative roles at Penn State. Sherburne has been with Maryland Athletics as the Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities, Operations and Events since 2017, where he has been responsible for managing Maryland Athletics' event operations, game day staff and facilities, while also overseeing the wrestling program.

"I want to thank Damon for the opportunity to step into an expanded role within the department," said Sherburne. "I am excited to apply my knowledge and experience to help further advance the mission of the University, Intercollegiate Athletics and the development of Maryland student-athletes."

An alumnus of Penn State, Sherburne played football and baseball and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Logistics in May, 1991 and a Masters Degree in Counselor Education in May, 1993. His wife, Dr. Sue Sherburne, is also a member of the leadership team, serving as the Senior Associate AD for Academics and Student Development/SWA, and the two reside in College Park.
