Storylines
- The Terps opened the 2019 season with a 1-0 win over USF last Thursday night at Ludwig Field. Freshman Malcolm Johnston netted the winner off an Eli Crognale assist in the 70th minute. The Terps outshot the Bulls 10-2 during the match. Maryland is now 15-6-6 under Sasho Cirovski in season openers and are undefeated in its last nine (8-0-1) home openers.
- Maryland is 42-29-10 against Virginia all-time. The teams drew 0-0 in their meeting at Audi Field last season.
- Maryland's stingy defense carried over from the end of the 2018 campaign. The Terps have now not given up a goal in their last 590 minutes of play. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Russell Shealy picked up his first career win and shutout in his first career start against USF.
- Maryland enters the 2019 season after capturing its fourth national championship in program history in 2018. Maryland went 9-1-1 down the stretch and did not give up a goal over five matches in the NCAA Tournament. The title was the third under head coach Sasho Cirovski, who enters his 27th season in charge of the Terps.
- Maryland returns a solid core of players from last year's title winning side. Freshman All-American William James Herve will lead the offense after tallying four goals and three assists in his first college campaign. Junior Eric Matzelevich and sophomore Justin Gielen will step into bigger scoring roles after filling rotational roles on last year's squad. The Terps will also look for contributions from Hofstra transfer Luke Brown and sophomore Brayan Padilla in the attacking third.
- The Terps will have a mix of experience level in the midfield. College Cup All-Tournament selection Eli Crognale will be a jack of all trades in the center of the park after notching four assists in his junior campaign last year. Redshirt freshman Nick Richardson will step in to a deeper lying role for the Terps after missing all of last year with an injury, while Brown and fellow newcomer David Kovacic will take on big roles as well.
- Maryland's backline will be without departed All-American Donovan Pines, but returns his partner in central defense Johannes Bergmann, who was on of Maryland's top performers in its NCAA Tournament run. College Cup All-Tournament selection Ben Di Rosa will return in his starting role at right back, with his twin brother, Matt Di Rosa, replacing Chase Gasper at left back. Sophomore Brett St. Martin, who started seven matches as a freshman last year will take over Pines' spot, with cover provided by talented freshman Marques Antoine.
- The Terps will feature a new man between the sticks after Dayne St. Clair, who played every minute in goal last year, moved on to MLS. Redshirt freshman Russell Shealy and freshman Niklas Neumann will both have a part to play early in the season. Both have had standout preseasons.
- Maryland enters the season as the No. 1 team in the country in the United Soccer Coaches and Top Drawer Soccer preseason polls. The Terps were not ranked at all during the regular season last year.
- The Terps added one staff member in the offseason and Casey Beyers, a Maryland native and former Wisconsin goalkeeper, takes over the goalkeeping coach duties. Former Maryland standouts Scott Buete and Jake Pace return to fill out Maryland's coaching staff while all everything director of operations Miles Vaughn comes back for his second season in College Park.
- Maryland was selected to finish second in the Big Ten Preseason Coaches Poll. Herve, Bergmann and Crognale were selected as Big Ten Players to Watch.
- Maryland will play all three teams that joined the Terps in Santa Barbara for the College Cup last December. Maryland hosts a national championship game rematch against Akron on Sept. 13 and will welcome Indiana for a rematch of the two sides' national semifinal contest on Oct. 18. The Terps will travel to face Michigan State on Friday, Oct. 11. The Terps will also travel to face cross country rival UCLA early in the season.
