Sept. 14, 2019 || Lincoln Financial Field || 12:02 pm EDT
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -Â No. 21 Maryland will play its first road contest of the 2019 season on Saturday when it travels to Temple to take on the Owls at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. The contest is set for a noon kick and will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network.
THIS WEEKEND'S STORYLINES
1. Maryland's 142 points this season are tied for the most through the first two games in a season by a Big Ten team since 1936 (Ohio State, 1996) and the third most by any FBS team over that span, trailing only Ole Miss' 149 in 2015 and Florida's 143 in 1994. The 142 points are the most through any two successive games in Maryland history, surpassing the previous mark of 122 (1954 vs. George Washington 48-6 and Missouri 74-13).
2. The 43 point differential in the Terps 63-20 win over #21 Syracuse last week was the largest margin of victory in a win by an unranked team over a ranked team in 20 years, since Oklahoma beat #13 Texas A&M, 51-6 in 1999. The 43 point differential is the seventh-best all-time from an unranked team's defeat of a ranked team. Maryland has outscored its opponents by a combined 122 points this season.Â
3. Maryland has forced a turnover in 14 straight contests, the fourth-longest streak in the FBS, trailing only Houston (19), Mississippi State (18) and Syracuse (16). The Terps, who notched a takeaway in every game last season continued the streak this past week, forcing two turnovers, one by way of a LB Keandre Jones forced fumble recovered by LB Ayinde Eley and one by a S Jordan Mosley interception. Maryland has won the turnover battle in 12 of the 14 games during the streak.Â
4. Head coach Michael Locksley is one of seven first year head coaches to start the 2019 season 2-0. Out of the 27 coaches beginning their first year leading their program, only Locksley, Eli Drinkwitz (Appalachian State), Mel Tucker (Colorado), Chris Klieman (Kansas State), Mack Brown (North Carolina), Ryan Day (Ohio State) and Matt Wells (Texas Tech) have won their first two games. Locksley and Tucker are the only two to defeat a ranked opponent.
5. Through two games, Maryland is averaging 335.5 yards on the ground, the fourth-best average in the country and the best in the Big Ten. Anthony McFarland Jr. has four rushing touchdowns, two in each game, the third best mark in the country. Six different Terps have scored a rushing touchdown, the most rushers with a TD in the Big Ten.
6. Junior transfer quarterback Josh Jackson has had an incredible start to his Terrapin career, throwing seven touchdowns on 38-of-62 passing for 541 yards through two games. Jackson is the first Terrapin quarterback to throw for seven touchdowns in the first two games of a season since at least 1977.Â
7. The Maryland defense has tallied 12 sacks through two games, the second highest total in the country and the Terrapins most over a two-game span since Maryland finished the year with 12 (7 vs. Rutgers, 5 vs. Boston College) in 2016. LB Keandre Jones has 3.5 to lead the Terps, the fourth highest total in the country.Â
