Big Ten Fellow - Postgraduate Internship for Former Student-Athletes

Background: The Big Ten Diversity Internship program annually provides funding for an entry-level administrative position at each member institution. The internship is intended to provide access, recruitment and leadership development experience for candidates interested in college athletes.

General position summary: As a primary role, this position is responsible for assisting with the day-to-day operations of the Student-Athlete Development unit and supporting the administration with organizational planning. The intern will have the opportunity to interact with Athletic Department staff, campus constituencies and various corporate and community partners.
 
Essential duties:
  • Assist with the development and implementation of all Maryland Made leadership, career and personal development programming
  • Serve as liaison for Community Outreach through Share the Shell for the Athletic Department
  • Provide support for the TERP 101 First-Year Transitions Seminar and TERP Leadership Academy curriculum
  • Create and distribute weekly Maryland Made News updates
  • Establish relationships with employers to enhance InTERPship Academy opportunities
  • Attend meetings of the Maryland Made Team, GSAC and SAAC
  • Assist the M Club in planning and executing the Letter Jacket Presentation Ceremony
  • Assist Terrapin Club staff with coordinating student-athlete thank-a-thons where student-athletes write thank you notes to donors.  
  • Manage the visiting athletics director's suite for all home football games; also assisting the M Club Executive Director in hosting alumni
  • Assist athletic administrators in other projects as assigned
 
Prerequisite requirements and desired knowledge, skills and abilities: Must have a bachelor's degree. Must be a self-starter who is attentive to detail, demonstrates strong organizational skills, and follows through to meet competing deadlines. Must be a team player, possess high level interpersonal skills and be customer service oriented. Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills and have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Must be creative and flexible to respond quickly and positively to shifting priorities and opportunities. Must have an ability to prioritize multiple projects and tasks and be willing to work occasional nights and weekends. Must be dependable, responsive to management direction and solicit feedback to improve performance. Must have the ability to handle confidential information.
 
Length of Internship: This is a 35-hour per week paid internship with a one-year appointment (September 2019 through July 31, 2020).
