2017 Men's Lacrosse ends the drought with its first NCAA title since 1975
#2: 2017 Men's Lacrosse wins NCAA Championship
After years of close encounters and heartbreaking endings, Maryland lacrosse returned to glory in 2017 with the program’s first national title in 42 years.

Dylan Maltz had two goals and an assist and Tim Rotanz scored three times as the top-seeded Terrapins defeated Ohio State 9-6 at Gillette Stadium.

Rotanz scored the final goal with 59 seconds left, allowing the Terps (16-3) a little comfort to count down the final minute after three goals by Ohio State in the fourth quarter pulled the Buckeyes within two.

The Terps held on, then rushed the field beneath a cloud of gloves and sticks they tossed in the air to celebrate the first NCAA Championship for head coach John Tillman.
Amber Jackson made the most of her one season as a Terp setting numerous records
#15: 2007 Amber Jackson's record setting season for Maryland softball
In Amber Jackson’s 2007 campaign, Jackson led the Terrapins in 11 offensive categories. She set Maryland single-season records with 24 home runs, 56 RBIs, and 55 walks. Jackson's .41 homers per game led the nation, and her 24 homers tied the ACC single-season record, which Georgia Tech's Whitney Haller set in the previous season. She also ranked third in both walks per game (.95) and slugging percentage (.949), 10th in country with .67 stolen bases per game, and 11th in runs per game with 1.04. The shortstop led the ACC in six offensive categories and was named to the All-ACC first team for her accomplishments.

Jackson was named an Easton First-Team All-American, becoming the first Terp ever to be honored by Easton, and a Second-Team All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Her NFCA second-team selection is the highest honor ever received by a Terrapin from that organization.

Following its first regional championship in school history the year prior, Maryland baseball outdid itself in its encore in 2015, toppling No. 1-overall seed UCLA in Los Angeles to advance to the Super Regionals.

Regional Most Outstanding Player LaMonte Wade and fellow All-Tournament selections Anthony Papio and Kevin Martir stood out at the plate and in the field. Maryland’s staff, headed by All-American Mike Shawaryn, gave up just seven runs over four games with closer Kevin Mooney recording saves in all three Terp wins.

2011 Field Hockey celebrates winning the NCAA Championship
#6: 2011 Field Hockey wins 5th NCAA title in seven seasons
2011 wasn’t supposed to be Maryland’s year. The Terrapins had lost all-time leading scorer Katie Bam the year before and they weren’t supposed to repeat. Senior Megan Frazer, sophomore Jill Witmer and hall of fame head coach Missy Meharg has other plans.

The Terrapins lost in the ACC Semifinals, which resulted in the spark the team needed. Maryland was not one of the top four seeds in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in years, but was selected as a host site. No. 3 Syracuse came to town and the Terrapins upset the Orange in overtime to advance to the Final Four.

First up in the Final Four was a matchup with No. 2 Old Dominion, who had beaten the Terrapins twice in the regular season by scores of 4-0 and 5-2. Maryland, led by Meharg and Frazer, came up with a different game plan and stifled the Monarchs, 4-0, to advance to the NCAA Championship game for the fourth straight year.

Awaiting in the NCAA title game was No. 1 North Carolina, the Terps’ rival. The two teams had met in the two previous national championship games, each winning one. Maryland trailed 2-0 with under four minutes to play. Freshman Katie Gerzabek tipped in a shot to get the Terps on the board, then senior Jemma Buckley scored off a penalty corner to force overtime with no time on the clock. Sophomore Jill Witmer scored the national-title winning goal 10 minutes into the overtime period for the Terps’ fifth NCAA title in seven years.
