COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Four standouts from in and around the University of Maryland family will be inducted into the Montgomery County Sports Hall of Fame, the MCSHF announced. Johnny Holiday, Tom Brown, Jeri Ingram, and Roy Lester will be officially inducted on October 18 via a virtual induction ceremony.
"These men and women have brought recognition and honor to our community in their respective fields," said MCSHF Board Chair Trish Heffelfinger. "It is indeed a stellar group. And in keeping with the COVID-19 pandemic, the induction ceremony will be virtual, and we will hear from all of our inductees."
Johnny Holiday - the "Voice of the Terps" - is entering his 40th season as the play-by-play voice of the University of Maryland. Holliday has broadcast nearly 1,500 Terrapin football and basketball games, including 14 bowl games, 10 Sweet 16 and two Final Four appearances, including Maryland's national championship victory over Indiana in 2002.
Tom Brown, who was an All-American football and baseball player for the Terps from 1960-62 and starred at nearby Montgomery Blair High School, went on to play for the Washington Senators and Green Bay Packers following his days in College Park. Brown was the starting first baseman for the Senators in 1963 and won a pair of Super Bowl titles with the Packers in 1965 and 1966. He is one of fewer than 70 men to play in both the NFL and MLB.
Jeri Ingram, who starred at nearby Springbrook High School, had a storied career at Maryland before her professional tennis career. Ingram went undefeated both in high school and in the Atlantic Coast Conference, earning an ACC Championship and All-ACC honors in 1989. Ingram's eight-year professional career was highlighted by four ITF singles titles and main draw appearances at the 1989 Australian Open and the 1993 US Open.
The late Roy Lester served at the University of Maryland as an assistant football coach from 1956-58 and was later the head coach for three seasons from 1969-71. Lester's coaching experience on the Montgomery County high school circuit was highlighted by six undefeated seasons while at the helm of Richard Montgomery HS in the 1960s, as well as state titles with Paint Branch (1975), and Magruder (1984, '86). Lester passed away in May of 2020 at the age of 96.
Established in 2018, MCSHF is a non-profit organization dedicated to celebrating the many positive benefits sports bring to our communities, especially to the youth of Montgomery County. Holliday, Brown, Ingram, and Lester will join fellow Terp alum Dominique Dawes (2019 inductee) in the MCSHF. Also inducted into the 2020 class will be Curtis Pride (Kennedy) and Amy Wood (Bethesda Chevy Chase).
