PISCATAWAY, NJ -- After a back-and-forth match, a fourth quarter goal was the difference as No. 6 seed Maryland (13-6) fell to the No. 3 seed Penn State, 3-2, in the Big Ten Field Hockey Quarterfinals at Rutgers Thursday night.
The Terrapins held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the first half. Maryland struck first when Bibi Donraadt scored off a penalty corner 7:33 into the match. Just under 4:00 later, Penn State's Anna Simon scored her first goal of three to tie the match.
Midway through the second quarter, Big Ten Freshman of the Year Hope Rose banged in a shot off a penalty corner to make it a 2-1 lead for the Terps. With 1:45 left in the second quarter, Simon struck again off a loose ball on a penalty corner to tie the match before halftime.
Simon scored the go-ahead goal for Penn State (14-4) 31 seconds into the fourth quarter when she poked a loose ball over the goal line.
Missy Meharg's Take
"It's the best teams in the country. You have to show up from the beginning. We're all disappointed, certainly the staff, certainly the players, that we just didn't come with a really tough mindset with a great Penn State team. We know that, we played them at home before, so nothing that they brought was surprising. We will get ourselves together and see where we fall in the NCAAs."
