Maryland Drops First Game to Northwestern

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland softball faced No. 24 Northwestern for its home opener on Friday, falling 9-0 in six innings. The Terps recorded hits from Ruby Butler, Regan Kerr and Taylor Okada.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Okada was first to get on base for the Terps after a single to right field, but Maryland couldn't get her back around 
  • Northwestern was first to get on the board, putting up four runs on four hits in the top of the second 
  • The Terps saw a double from Butler in the bottom of the same frame, but an out following the hit ended Maryland's appearance
  • The Wildcats threatened with the bases loaded in the top of the third, but a catch from Butler and two from Jaeda McFarland ended things for Northwestern
  • Northwestern added on another two runs on two hits in the top of the fourth to put them up 6-0
  • Maryland put up a great defensive effort in the 5th, leaving the Wildcats with only one hit and no runs
  • A homer from Northwestern's Morgan Newport sent two Wildcats on base back home, to extend the lead 9-0

Maryland will face Northwestern for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 3 with game one beginning at 2:00 p.m.
