Baseball Celebrates Senior Day in Home Finale

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Maryland baseball team dropped its regular-season finale to Indiana, 7-3, on Sunday at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium. Chris Alleyne, Randy Bednar, Tyler Blohm, Austin Chavis, Mark DiLuia, Sean Fisher, Tommy Gardiner, Zach Thompson, Justin Vought, Drew Wilden, and Elliot Zoellner were honored for their Senior Day in a special pregame ceremony, while nine of the 11 seniors participated in today's game.

What You Should Know
  • Maryland finished the regular-season 28-16, finishing in standalone second place in the Big Ten.
  • The Terps' second-place finish is the team's highest ever Big Ten regular-season finish in program history, and the best overall conference finish since placing second in the ACC in 1980.
  • In the second half of the season, Maryland won seven consecutive weekend series and finished last 22 games with a record of 18-4, the best record in the conference over that stretch.
  • Randy Bednar homered on his senior day, a solo shot in the second inning to give the Terps the lead.
  • Chris Alleyne tested the Indiana defense and was rewarded with a run as he scored Maryland's second run of the day after scurrying to third on an errant pickoff attempt at first, then coming around to score after the Hoosier first baseman sailed a throw home.
  • Meanwhile, on the rubber, senior lefty Sean Fisher tossed a trio of scoreless frames to open the game in his last start at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
  • Once Fisher departed, senior Zach Thompson got the call, tossing a perfect fourth and working into the fifth before giving way to fellow senior Tyler Blohm.
  • Sean Heine and Sam Bello picked up the mid-late innings for the Terps while the offense scuffled against Indiana's staff. Senior Mark DiLuia made his season debut after battling a shoulder injury, striking out the only batter he faced on three pitches to close out the top of the ninth.
Up Next
  • Maryland awaits its NCAA Tournament fate, as the Terps will learn their destiny during ESPN2's broadcast of the NCAA Baseball Championship Selection Show. The show is scheduled to air at noon and will lead into the broadcast of the men's lacrosse national championship, where Maryland faces off against old ACC foe Virginia.
