WASHINGTON, DC – Another perfectly balanced game allowed No. 9 Maryland (7-2) to dominate American, 3-0, Sunday afternoon in Washington. The Terrapins picked up their third straight win and third in six days.
A turnover by American (4-3) in its own defensive zone allowed
Bibi Donraadt and
Hope Rose to run out for a two-on-none breakaway where Donraadt found Rose for a wide-open goal to open the scoring just 5:00 in. Donraadt once again found herself with the ball as she wrapped around the right side of the defense and whipped a shot past the Eagles goalie to give the Terps an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter.
The Terps took that lead into the second quarter as they didn't allow American any sustained offense with defenders
Riley Donnelly,
Maura Verleg, and
Rayne Wright all stifling any chances that came their way. Maryland continued to apply pressure but a
Julianna Tornetta goal off of a penalty corner was waved off.Â
The second half was much of the same as Maryland continued to live in the Eagles' defensive zone. Tornetta gathered the ball at the top left of the box and fired a pass to the front of the net where Donraadt calmly gathered it and fired a backhand shot past the goalie for her second score of the game. The Eagles couldn't crack the midfield due to the presence of the
Emma DeBerdine and
Brooke DeBerdine, who were able to maintain possession and pass the ball along the line, keeping American away from their goalie,
Noelle Frost. When she needed to, Frost was on her game as she stopped both shots that came her way and didn't allow any rebounds for the Eagles to pounce on.Â
American wasn't as lucky as a big rebound of their own found the stick of
Emma DeBerdine which the junior immediately put into the net, extending the Terps lead to 4-0. Maryland spent the final five minutes passing the ball back and forth, still looking for offensive opportunities but not taking any unnecessary chances and preserving the shutout.Â
Missy Meharg's Take
"A dominant win after four games in nine days and flying to and from Indiana and coming downtown. Steve Jennings always has such a formidable team, very, very well-structured. A big time win. Maryland just got on the board quickly. Our passing, our sustained dominance through passing, was exceptional and the best match of the year so far with that."
