B1G CHAMPS! No. 8 Terps Draw With Indiana In Thriller To Earn Big Ten Title

BLOOMINGTON, IN -- Stefan Copetti scored in the 87th minute and the No. 8 Terps captured the Big Ten Championship for the first time since 2016 thanks to a thrilling 1-1 draw with Indiana. It marks the third Big Ten title in program history (2014, 2016 and 2022) and the 24th overall regular-season conference title, with 21 coming in the ACC.

Indiana notched a goal in the 25th minute as Ryan Wittenbrink sent a beautifully-struck free kick into the back of the net. The Terps kept the pressure on the Hoosiers for most of the second half, but kept being turned away until Copetti finally cashed with just over three minutes left to play. His beautiful header off a Joshua Bolma service brought the Terps to a conference-best 16 points and secured the Big Ten title. Copetti's goal marked his fifth of the season and tied him with Malcolm Johnston for the team-leader in goals. Copetti has also scored in four of the last six matches.

The Terps finished the regular season with a 9-2-5 overall record and an 4-0-4 mark in the Big Ten to go undefeated in conference play for the first time since 2016. Indiana finished 8-3-6, 3-1-4.

Maryland outshot Indiana 12-6 and earned six corners to the Hoosiers' two.

The title is also the 47th overall Big Ten championship for Maryland since joining the Big Ten, including Tournament Championships. The Terps recently secured another B1G Championship on Oct. 16 when the field hockey program topped Rutgers.

Breaking Down The Action

  • Still trailing 1-0, the Terps came into the second half with a great sense of urgency. In the 48th minute, Nick Richardson sent a beautiful cross to Stefan Copetti that required a fantastic save by Indiana's JT Harms.
  • William Kulvik made a terrific slide tackle to break up a prime Indiana scoring opportunity off a Maryland giveaway a few minutes later.
  • The Terps were aggressive for the remainder of play and created multiple chances, but the Hoosier defense held strong for a while.
  • Copetti's late score was assisted by Bolma.
