Maryland Inducts 2022 Hall of Fame Class Friday Night

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Ten exceptional alumni selected for the University of Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2022 were inducted on Friday at the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center. 
 
The class includes: Katie (O'Donnell) Bam (field hockey), Dominic Berger (men's track & field), Vernon Davis (football), Bob Grossman (baseball), Sascha Newmarch (women's lacrosse), Caitlyn McFadden Phipps (women's lacrosse), Hudson Taylor (wrestling), Kristi Toliver (women's basketball), Taylor Twellman (men's soccer) and Greivis Vasquez (men's basketball).
  
Founded in 1982 by the M Club and developed as a collaborative effort with the Athletics Department, the Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame pays tribute to those superior Terrapin athletes, coaches and administrators who have made major contributions to the honor and fame of the University of Maryland, and have continued to demonstrate the positive values learned through competing in intercollegiate sports. Induction into the Hall of Fame represents the highest athletic honor the University can bestow.
  
The M Club will also present Honorary M Awards to Jim Knight, Jim Merkel, Linh Nguyen, Chuck Rosenfield, and Jim Spencer for their longtime dedication to Maryland athletics. Martin and Tricia Green will be honored with the Distinguished Citizens of the Year in recognition of their years of unwavering support of Maryland student-athletes. 
Katie (O'Donnell) Bam

Field Hockey

  • Considered to be one of the best American field hockey players in the history of the sport
  • Two-time winner of the Honda Award
  • Just the third (and one of only three) Maryland student-athletes to be a four-time First-Team All-American
  • Two-time NFHCA Regional Player of the Year (2009 and 2010)
  • Led Maryland to the 2008 and 2010 NCAA Championships
  • The top scorer of the 2009 and 2010 NCAA Tournaments and three-time NCAA All-Tournament team selection
  • Ranks first all-time at Maryland in points (306), goals (99) and assists (108, which is an NCAA record)
  • Four-time ACC Offensive Player of the Year (only the third student-athlete to win all four years in any sport)
  • Two-time ACC Tournament MVP and four-time selection to ACC All-Tournament team; two-time All-ACC Academic Team selection
  • Member of the 2012 London and 2016 Rio U.S. Olympic teams
  • Led the U.S. National team to gold medals at the 2015 & 2011 Pan American Games, the 2014 Champions Challenge, the 2013 World League Round 2, and the 2008 Junior Pan American Games; competed in 222 international caps for the U.S. Women's National Team

Men's Track & Field

  • Three-time All-American (Indoor 60 Hurdles - 2006 and 2007, Outdoor 110 Hurdles - 2006)
  • NCAA Runner-Up in 110 Hurdles in 2006
  • Four-time ACC champion (Indoor 60 Hurdles - 2006 and 2007, Outdoor 110 Hurdles - 2006 and 2007)
  • Six-time All-ACC selection (Indoor & Outdoor from 2006-08)
  • Holds the second-fastest time in Maryland history in outdoor 110 Hurdles when he graduated, only behind Renaldo Nehemiah
  • Still holds the school record in the indoor 60 Hurdles (7.67) by .25 seconds
  • Continued to compete after graduation and finished second in the 60 Hurdles at the 2014 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships

Vernon Davis

  • First-Team All-American in 2005 by the Associated Press, AFCA and CollegeFootballNews.com
  • First team All-ACC in 2005
  • Named the 2005 team MVP
  • Finished his career tied for 15th in career receptions with 83
  • Led the team in receptions and receiving yards in back-to-back seasons in 2004 and 2005
  • 871 receiving yards in 2005 were fifth-most in program history and still rank seventh for single-season receiving yards
  • Selected with the sixth overall pick in the first round of the 2006 NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers.
  • Played in the NFL for 14 seasons for San Francisco, Denver and Washington
  • 2013 All-Pro selection and Super Bowl 50 Champion
  • Two-time Pro Bowl selection (2009 and 2013)

Bob Grossman

Baseball

  • First-Team AACBA All-American as a junior in 1972
  • Named ACC Player of the Year and All-ACC in 1972, the only Terp to ever be named ACC Player of the Year
  • Recorded the first two no-hitters in Maryland history: March 25. 1972 against Syracuse, 9-0 and April 8, 1972 against North Carolina, 6-0
  • Led Maryland to two ACC Championships in 1970 and 1971
  • Drafted by Cleveland after his junior season, in the second round (26th overall)
  • Played seven years in the Cleveland organization and was a member of the 40-man roster for three seasons
  • Owner and clinical director for 30 years of Sports and Orthopaedic Therapy Services, a physical therapy practice emphasizing functional diagnosis and manual therapy in Silver Spring, Md.

Sascha Newmarch

Women's Lacrosse

  • Lead the Terps to four straight National Championships from 1995-98, going 75-4 over her time at Maryland
  • Three-time All-American in 1996, 1997 and 1998
  • Three-time member of the NCAA Tournament All-Tournament team (1996, 1997, 1998)
  • All-ACC selection in 1997 and 1998
  • 1998 National Midfielder of the Year
  • Led Maryland in points and goals in 1998
  • Finished her career fourth all-time in points (223), fifth in goals (149), and sixth all-time in assists (74)
  • Was third all-time in career groundballs with 167 when she concluded her career
  • Australia native played for the National Team from 1992-2005
  • Set the path for many Aussie Terps to make their way to College Park from down under, including Jen Adams, Sarah Forbes and Sarah Mollison

  • Led Maryland to the 2010 NCAA championship, the first under head coach Cathy Reese, earning Most Outstanding player of the Tournament
  • 2010 Tewaaraton Award winner - presented the to the nation's college lacrosse player of the year and 2010 Honda Award winner
  • Selected as a finalist for the 2010 National Sportswoman of the Year
  • Two-time National Midfielder of the Year (2009 and 2010)
  • Three-time All-American (First-Team in 2009 and 2010; Second-Team in 2008)
  • Led Maryland to back-to-back ACC championships (2009 and 2010) and was named Tournament MVP both seasons
  • Two-time ACC Player of the Year (2009 and 2010); Three-time All-ACC (2008, 2009, 2010)
  • 2010 CoSIDA Academic All-American; Four-time ACC All-Academic Team selection
  • Two-time ACC Women's Lacrosse Scholar Athlete of the Year (2009 & 2010)
  • Two-time member of the U.S. National Team; Helped the U.S. win gold medals in the 2009 & 2013 FIL World Championships
  • Has helped lead Maryland to four NCAA championships and seven regular-season conference championships and five conference tournament titles as a coach

  • Two-time ACC champion at 197 lbs. (2008 and 2010)
  • 2010 Most Outstanding Wrestler at the ACC Tournament
  • Four-time All-ACC honoree
  • Maryland record holder for career falls (87)
  • Holds four of the top six spots on the single-season falls list (1st with 24, 2009-10; 3rd with 19, 2008-09; 4th with 18, 2007-08; 6th with 15, 2006-07)
  • Upon graduation founded Athlete Ally a non-profit organization with the mission of educating, encouraging and empowering straight athlete allies to combat homophobia and transphobia in sports
  • Was named the 2012 University of Maryland Alumnus of the Year for the school of Undergraduate Studies for his work as an LGBT rights activist.

Kristi Toliver

  • Starting guard on the 2006 NCAA championship team, hit the biggest shot in program history to tie the NCAA title game and force overtime in 2006
  • 2008, 2009 WBCA, USBWA All-American; 2008 AP All-American
  • Three-time All-ACC Selection (2007, 2008, 2009)
  • 2009 ACC Player of the Year
  • Named to 2009 All-ACC Tournament First Team (first under head coach Brenda Frese)
  • Owns program records in career assists (751), three-pointers made (300), three-point field goal percentage (.408), free throw percentage (.866) and assists in a season (275) in 2007-08 season
  • Selected third overall in the 2009 WNBA draft by the Chicago Sky and played 14 seasons in the WNBA
  • Won the 2010 WNBA title with the Los Angeles Sparks and 2016 WNBA title with the Washington Mystics
  • Three-time WNBA All-Star (2013, 2018, 2020)
  • One of the first women to earn a coaching position in the NBA, working for the Washington Wizards and now the Dallas Mavericks

Taylor Twellman

Men's Soccer

  • Two-time Second-Team All-American by College Soccer Weekly (1998 and 1999) and Third-Team NSCAA All-American in 1999
  • Two-time First-Team All-ACC (1998, 1999)
  • A finalist for the Hermann Trophy and MAC Player of the Year Award as a sophomore in 1999
  • Finished his career 10th in career goals (28), tied for sixth in career assists (17), and tied for seventh in career points (73)
  • Helped lead Maryland to two NCAA tournament appearances and a berth in the 1998 College Cup (the first appearance under head coach Sasho Cirovski); scored the game-winning goals in the first and second-round NCAA tournament games in 1998.
  • 1998 Freshman of the Year by Soccer America and College Soccer Weekly
  • Left Maryland after the 1999 season to sign with 1860 Munich of Germany's Bundesliga
  • Returned to the States in 2002 and was selected second overall by the New England Revolution in the MLS SuperDraft.
  • Played in 174 games for the Revolution and totaled 101 goals from 2002-10 as a five-time MLS all-star and earning MLS MVP in 2005
  • Member of the US Senior National team from 2002-08 and scored six international goals in 30 career caps
  • Currently serves as lead analyst for ESPN's MLS coverage and has been the lead analyst for the World Cup

Greivis Vasquez

  • Winner of the 2010 Bob Cousy Award presented to the nation's top point guard (the first player in Maryland history to win a national position player of the year award)
  • 2010 All-American (First Team by Wooden Award, Fox Sports, The Sporting News; Second-Team by AP, Yahoo Sports)
  • 2010 ACC Player of the Year
  • Led Maryland to the 2010 ACC regular season championship
  • Three-time All-ACC (First Team in 2009 and 2010; Second-Team in 2008), making him one of just 15 players in Maryland men's basketball history to earn three all-conference selections
  • Named to the 2009 ACC All-Tournament team
  • Second on the all-time points list at Maryland (2,171) and is just the third player in school history to surpass 2,100 points, along with Juan Dixon and Len Bias
  • Hold school record for double-figure scoring games (117); second on the all-time assists list (772) and is one of only two players - along with Steve Blake - to surpass 700 assists in their careers
  • One of just two players in school history to record a triple-double (35 pts., 11 reb., 10 ast. vs. North Carolina on Feb. 21, 2009)
  • Selected with the 28th pick of the first round of the 2010 NBA draft by the Memphis Grizzlies; played seven seasons in the NBA for Memphis, New Orleans, Toronto, Sacramento, Milwaukee, and Brooklyn
