No. 2 Terps Fall In B1G Semifinals To No. 4 Northwestern, 2-1

COLUMBUS, OH -- No. 2 Maryland was defeated by No. 4 Northwestern, 2-1, in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals on Friday afternoon at Buckeye Varsity Field.

The Terps will now head into NCAA Tournament action, with their first games coming on Friday, Nov. 11 at a time and location to be determined. Their path to a potential NCAA Title will be revealed on Sunday during the NCAA Tournament selection show. The show will air on ncaa.com at 10pm on Sunday evening.

The Wildcats got a pair of goals off penalty corners in the first half, but the Terps cut the deficit in half late in the third quarter as Hope Rose scored her team-high 14th goal of the season. Maryland established offensive pressure throughout the remainder of the game, but could not find the equalizer late.

Christina Calandra notched a career-best seven saves to keep the Terps close throughout the entire game.

Both Maryland, the two seed in the Big Ten Tournament, and third-seeded Northwestern now stand at 17-3 on the season.

Breaking Down The Action
  • Northwestern went on top early as the Wildcats converted on their second penalty of the day just 4:20 into the game.
  •  Calandra came up with a massive kick save to keep the Terps within one goal through the first quarter, despite Northwestern earning five penalty corners in the stanza.
  • The Wildcats doubled their lead with just over five minutes remaining in the first half thanks to a successful penalty stroke attempt from Peyton Halsey.
  • The Terps got on the board with 2:13 left in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 2-1. Rayne Wright inserted the ball on a penalty corner and Rose did the rest, slapping the shot past Annabel Skubisz in goal.
  • Calandra came up with another huge stop in the middle of the final stanza to keep the deficit at one. She finished with a career-high seven saves.
  • The Terps pulled Calandra with about three minutes remaining, but were unable to find the tying score.
