Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 20 Terps Drop Home Game To No. 16 UCLA

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- No. 16 UCLA jumped out to a big lead early and No. 20 Maryland was never able to recover, falling 87-60. The Terps (8-3) were never able to find sustained offensive rhythm and struggled to stop the Bruins (9-2) in the paint.

Ian Martinez led the Terps with a Maryland career-high 16 points, including a career-best four triples. Donta Scott notched a 12-point, six rebound performance.

Jaylen Clark (19 points), David Singleton (18) and Jaime Jaquez Jr. (14) combined for 51 points to power the Bruins.

Willard's Takes

"It's obviously a missed opportunity, but they're a great basketball team. Right now we're just a little beat up, a little tired. They came in and played well; they were aggressive. We were just a little bit defensive and just got off to another bad start that kinda took the wind out of our sails."

"I think UCLA's pretty good. They have guys who have played in the Final Four, guys who have played in PAC-12 Championships. I'm proud of this team. We're 8-3; we're in a good spot…This is the first time this team has had to go through adversity and we're figuring it out a little bit on the fly. We didn't figure it out very well tonight, obviously."

Breaking Down The Action
  • Maryland's defense came out strong, forcing UCLA to miss its first six shots of the game. The Terps could not capitalize on the effort, missing their first eight attempts until Ian Martinez hit a wing three-pointer, cutting the Bruins lead to 7-3 at the 15:06 mark.
  • UCLA put together a 17-2 run to build out a 26-7 lead before a Donta Scott steal and drive ended a nearly three minute scoring drought for the Terps.
  • The Bruins scored 23 of the final 36 points to hold a 49-20 halftime advantage.
  • UCLA led by as many as 38 in the second half, but the Terps ended up outscoring the Bruins' by two in the period thanks to a 40-point outburst, with much of the damage coming in the final five minutes. UCLA came away with the 87-60 win.

Double-Figure Update
  • Martinez scored 16 to give him his third game with double-digit scoring this season and 12th for his career. Martinez' made four three-pointers to set a new career-high on 4-of-5 shooting from deep.
  • Scott notched 12 points and has now scored in double figures seven times this season and 52 times overall.

Donta In The Record Books
  • With 12 points against the Bruins, Scott continues to stand 53rd all-time in Maryland history with 1,079 career points. He is chasing No. 52 is Keith Gatlin (1,087).
  • With six rebounds on Wednesday night, he now has 565 career boards, remaining at 36th all-time. Next up is Rodney Elliott and his 570 total rebounds.
