Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 21 Men’s Hoops Surges Past UMBC, 80-64, Closing Out Non-Conference Play

COLLEGE PARK, MD - Led by 19 from Don Carey, the No. 21 Maryland men's basketball team closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 80-64 win over UMBC on Thursday night at the XFINITY Center.

The win improved the Terps to 10-3 on the year as they next return to Big Ten play starting Sunday afternoon at Michigan. The Retrievers fell to 9-5 on the season with a six-game winning streak halted. The game marked the first meeting between the two teams since 2017 and was the 15th consecutive win for Maryland in 15 all-time meetings.

Jahmir Young finished the night with 18 points, seven boards and two assists. Hart had 6 boards and was 5-of-8 from the field. Don Carey hit 5 three pointers to finish with 19 points - a new season high and his best shooting performance since hitting four triples against both Saint Louis and Miami in the Mohegan Sun Tournament.

The first half saw the Terps come alive with a 10-0 run that was sparked by a three-point play from Young and a quick four points from Hart giving Maryland a 21-17 lead at the 9:15 mark. Young had five of the points in that run which pushed him over the 1,600 plateau for his career.

Maryland clamped down defensively holding UMBC without a field goal for nearly six minutes in the first half as the Retrievers went 0-for-9 from the field after starting the game 7-of-14. Jarvis Doles, who finished with 13 points in the first half, broke the slump with a jumper at the 6:36 mark.

Both Hart and Young were sparks for the Maryland offense as they combined to go 8-of-15 from the field.

UMBC closed out the first half with an 8-3 run clipping Maryland's nine-point lead to 33-30 at the intermission.

Maryland opened the second stanza with a 6-0 run thanks to a pair of buckets from Young and two free throws from Emilien. The Retrievers were able to pull back to within a possession before a free throw from Julian Reese and Carey's second triple of the night put the Terps up 48-42 at the 12:47 mark.

A three pointer and a pair of free throws from Hart highlighted a 7-0 run which gave Maryland its first double figure lead of the night, 55-44, with 8:49 to go.

Just over a minute later, Carey's third three of the night pushed the advantage to 14, 60-46, marking the largest lead of the night for the Terps. Carey's season-high tying fourth three pointer five minutes later sealed the win pushing the lead to 15 and forcing a UMBC timeout. Willard's Take

"You know we started off the game really well and we followed what we wanted to do. We scored nine quick points, we got the ball inside and then got some stops in transition. I just think sometimes in transition, we just get a little trigger happy and we stopped doing what we were doing well. Coming out the first play we just wanted to make sure we got something going inside with Jahmir driving and Jahmir really kind of set the tone for us."

From Don Carey

"In terms of my demeanor, I've been consistent with that. I know the type of player that I am and I know the type of work I put in, so eventually you know the work will show."
