WASHINGTON D.C. – The Maryland wrestling team defeated American 31-12 on Saturday night in the nation's capitol.
The Terps (6-12, 0-8 Big Ten) won seven bouts, including four straight between 141 and 165-pounds.
Danny Bertoni notched the Terps' first win of the night with a dominant 16-0 technical fall over American's Ethan Szerencsits. Bertoni squeezed three separate four-point nearfalls between takedowns on either end. Michael North followed up that effort with a 9-3 decision of his own which featured North riding out Patrick Ryan for the majority of the second period.
The Terps then earned back-to-back bonus point victories between Lucas Cordio and Gaven Bell. Cordio put the Terps ahead at 157-pound when he cradled up Antonio Segura and tossed him to his back. The victory was Cordio's second bonus point win in two days. Bell then secured a 9-0 major, his first bonus points of the season, after a late reversal and four-point nearfall.
Kyle Cochran, Jaron Smith, and Zach Schrader combined to win the final three bouts and earn 14 total team points.
Maryland was deducted a team point after the conclusion of the heavyweight bout.
