Russell Scores 23 In 74-64 Loss At Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, IN – Maryland saw its two-game win streak come to an end at Indiana, falling 74-64, on Thursday night inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Fatts Russell led the Terps with 23 points, knocking down 5-of-9 three-pointers. It marked the fourth time in five games he scored 20-plus points. He equaled his season-high in three-pointers. 

Hakim Hart netted 14 points. The junior connected on 3-of-4 three-pointers. Donta Scott had 10 points and five rebounds. 

Julian Reese (eight points) played a key role in a Terps' second-half comeback, where they cut a 10-point deficit to three points with just under 10 minutes left in the game. The freshman was 4-of-4 including a layup that cut the deficit to three with just under 10 minutes left at 53-50. The Hoosiers scored 11 of the next 13 points to take a 12-point lead, at 64-52 with 5:53 left. Indiana maintained a double-figure lead the remainder of the way.  

The Terps are now 13-15 overall and 6-12 in the Big Ten. 


Indiana shot a blazing 75.0 percent (15-of-20) in the second half including a run making 13 consecutive field goals midway through the period. 

Indiana (17-10, 8-9) was led by Xavier Johnson (24 points, making 7-of-7 from the floor and 7-of-8 from the free-throw line) and Race Thompson, who scored 19 points, as he made 9-of-12 from the floor and grabbed nine rebounds



Breaking Down The Action
  • Indiana used an 8-0 run late in the second half to take th first double-figure lead of the game at 28-18 with 4:49 left in the half. A Hart three-pointer ended the spurt as he scored the Terps' first points in nearly seven minutes. Maryland answered with nine points to draw within 28-27 with 13 seconds left in the half. Indiana led 30-27 at intermission. Hart led all scorers with nine points. 
  • After Maryland tied the game on a Hart three-pointer seconds into the second half, Indiana reeled off eight points in a row to take a 38-30 edge with 16:33 left. The Terps cut the deficit to five with 14:20 left on a dunk by Julian Reese, 42-37. After the teams traded baskets, Russell and Reese hit consecutive shots to bring the Terps within three at 53-50. Both teams were red-hot in the half with Maryland hitting seven consecutive baskets and Indiana bettering that with 13 consecutive made field goals to take a 64-52 lead with 5:53 left in the half.  

Double-Figure Update
  • Russell (23 points) hit double-figures for the 23rd time this season, including the last 10 games in a row, and 99th time in his career.  It was his seventh game with 20-plus points this season and fourth time in five games. It was his 38th career game with 20-plus points. He is just two points from 2,000 in his career. 
  • Hart (14 points) tallied his 16th game this year and 24th in his career in double-figures. 
  • Scott (10 points) scored 10-plus for the 20th time this season and 43rd time in his career.

Ayala Moves Up List
  • With three points in the game, Eric Ayala moved to 24th in career scoring with 1,375 at Maryland, passing Exree Hipp (1,372). Next on the list at 23rd is legend Gene Shue with 1,384 and No. 22 Dez Wells with 1,398. 
  • Ayala also hit one three-pointer and now has 211 in his career. He's third all-time behind only Juan Dixon (239) and Greivis Vasquez (230)
