No. 24 Terps Stay Perfect At Home With 5-1 Win Over Georgetown

COLLEGE PARK, MD – No. 24 Maryland stayed perfect at Bob 'Turtle' Smith Stadium with a 5-1 win over Georgetown on Monday. The Terps, 13-2 overall, are now 6-0 at home. 

With the win, Maryland is off to its best start to a season since 2002, when the Terps started 14-2. Maryland is off to its best home start to a season since starting 10-0 in 2017. 

On the mound, Jason Savacool spun another strong outing as he went eight innings, allowing a career-low three hits allowed and one run while striking out nine. 

Nick Lorusso blasted his second homer of the season with a bomb to center field in the seventh inning.  The Villanova transfer had the best game of his young Terps' career as he went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

Maxwell Costes continued his torrid stretch as he homered for the fourth time in five games.

Freshman Zach Martin drew his first career start in right field and made the most of it, picking up the first two hits of his collegiate career. He also walked twice as he reached based in all four plate appearances. 


The Hoyas (9-6) scored their only run of the game on a home run by Ubaldo Lopez in the second inning. 

Breaking Down The Action 
  • Lopez put the Hoyas up 1-0 on a shot to leftfield in the top of the second. 
  • The Terps answered in the bottom half of the inning as Jacob Orr's sacrifice fly brought home Bobby Zmarzlak to even the game at 1-1.
  • Maryland took the lead at 2-1 as Lorusso's single to left brought home Chris Alleyne in the third. 
  • Costes blasted his team-high seventh homer in the fifth to push the Terps' edge to 4-1.
  • Troy Schreffler Jr. made a diving catch in center field in the top of the seventh inning to preserve the three-run lead. 
  • Lorusso's solo blast to center pushed the Terps' lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the seventh. 
  • Sean Heine closed out the game in the ninth inning with a pair of strikeouts.

  • 0.94: The Terps trio of starting pitchers (Nick Dean, Ryan Ramsey and Jason Savacool) have a combined 0.94 WHIP this season. 
  • 2.14: The Terps trio of starting pitchers (Dean, Ramsey and Savacool) have a combined 2.14 ERA. 
  • 3: Savacool allowed just three hits on Monday, his lowest hits allowed total in 18 career starts. 
  • 4: The Terps have won four games in a row, including three wins over the weekend wraparound set against Georgetown and Cornell.
