Top-Seeded Terps, Unseeded Cavaliers Set for Quarterfinals

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The top-seeded Maryland men's lacrosse team faces the Virginia Cavaliers on Sunday May 22 at 2:30 PM in Columbus, Ohio. The Terps lead the nation in scoring offense and scoring margin, among other categories, as the lone undefeated team. 

Virginia advanced to the quarterfinals with a 17-10 win over Brown last Saturday while the Terps topped Vermont 21-5. The two programs have met in the last two NCAA Tournaments with eight total meetings in the May tournament.

VIRGINIA STORYLINES

NCAA NUMBERS
  • This will mark Maryland's 44th appearance in program history and an NCAA-best 19th straight appearance.
  • Maryland's first ever NCAA appearance came in 1971 when the Terps lost in the championship game to top-seeded Cornell and former Terp Richie Moran. Moran passed away in late April.
  • Throughout the team's previous 43 appearances the program is 65-40 all-time in the tournament with 27 Final Four trips.Since 2011 under Coach Tillman, the Terps have made every tournament, gone 25-9, and earned eight Championship Weekend appearances. Tillman owns the most NCAA Tournament victories of any active coach with 25.
  • The Terps are the number one overall seed in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time under Tillman (2016-17-18-22) and the ninth time in program history. Maryland is 19-6 all-time as the top seed, advancing to the semifinals on all eight previous occasions.

  • Fifth-year senior Logan Wisnauskas has established himself as one of the most dangerous offensive players in college lacrosse during his career with the Terps, and now leads the Maryland in his final year with the program. Here's a look at Wisnauskas by the numbers.
    1. 1 - Wearing the iconic "1" jersey, Wisnauskas averages more assists per game (2.53) and points per game (6.00) while wearing the jersey than any other to wearing the number for Maryland.
      3 - Wisnauskas (327) is third on the active list of D1 players in points, 74 behind the active leader in Chris Gray of North Carolina (401)
      5 – Wisnauskas (196) is tied for second on the active list of D1 players in goals, 8 behind the active leader in Gray of North Carolina (204)
      8 – Wisnauskas has seven career eight-point games as a Terrapin – the most in program history – last posting eight (5G, 3A) in Maryland's dominating victory over Johns Hopkins
      19 - Wisnauskas became the 19th student-athlete, and first Terp, to ever reach 300 points in their career.
      38 - Wisnauskas has recorded 38 hat tricks in his career with 12 coming this season. His total of 38 is tied with Jared Bernhardt.

  • Maryland dominated the Big Ten Yearly Honors with four of the five yearly awards going to the Terps. Plus, the maximum of eight players found themselves on the All-Big Ten teams, including five on the top line. Those were all program record numbers.
  • Among the yearly awards, Logan Wisnauskas was Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, Brett Makar was Big Ten Defenive Player of the Year, Luke Wierman was Specialist of the Year, and Coach Tillman was unanimously Big Ten Coach of the Year.
  • The First Team All-Big Ten featured Wisnauskas, Makar, Wierman, Keegan Khan, and Roman Puglise. On the second team was Jon Donville, Kyle Long, and John Geppert. With only eight players allowed per team, the Terps earned the maximum number of spots
  • An incredible 12 total Terps were named Inside Lacrosse All-Americans on Sunday night. Five Terps (Wisnauskas, Puglise, Makar, Wierman, and Donville) were on the first team. Ajax Zappitello earned a spot on the third team while Kyle Long, John Geppert, Bubba Fairman, Jake Higgins, and John Geppert
  • Seven Terps were named USA Lacrosse Magazine All-Americans, with Wisnauskas and Puglise on the first team. Luke Wierman and Brett Makar are on the second team while Jonathan Donville was earned a spot on the third team. Logan McNaney and Matt Rahill were both honorable mentions.

  • Maryland was ranked No. 1 in the country in both the USILA Coaches Poll and the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll this week for the 12th straight week. This was their sixth week as the unanimous selection.
  • The Terps have been tabbed No. 1 in at least one of the polls at some point during the year in four of the last six seasons.

  • Maryland has won 40 consecutive games when allowing an opponent under 10 goals dating back to the 2017 National Championship season. 
  • The Terps' defense held opponents to 10 or fewer goals in ten of their fifteen games this season. The stellar defense comes alongside a squad that has forced 137 turnovers. 
  • Logan Wisnauskas has started 72 consecutive games and recorded a point in all 72. He has multiple points in his last 56 games.
  • Maryland was won 24 consecutive regular season games dating back to Feb. 18, 2020. 
  • A Terp has record a hat trick in 54 straight games dating back to May 26, 2018. 
  • Maryland has an NCAA-best 19 consecutive 10-win seasons and an NCAA-best 19 consecutive NCAA appearances.

  • John Tillman is in his 15th season as a head coach, and 12th with the Terps, with a 177-59 career record for a (.747) winning percentage. Tillman is 157-40 (.797) overall in Maryland with a 4-5 record against Virginia.
  • Virginia head coach Lars Tiffany is 67-25 (.728) at Virginia with a 180-94 (.657) record overall including his time at Brown.
  • Tiffany lost to Maryland in the 2016 Quarterfinals in his final game as the Brown head coach.
  • Both Tillman and Tiffany spent time in the Ivy League from 2008-10. Tiffany led Brown while Tillman led Harvard.

  • Maryland is 48-46 all-time against Virginia including a 23-12 victory early this season on March 19 at Audi Field in Washington D.C.
  • This marks the third consecutive tournament the Terps have faced the Cavaliers. Virginia won 13-12 in the 2019 Quarterfinals before winning 17-16 in the 2021 NCAA Title Game. There was no 2020 NCAA Tournament.
  • The Terps are 3-5 all-time against Virginia in the NCAA Tournament. Maryland is 2-3 in the quarterfinals against the Cavaliers.
