No. 3 Terrapins Dominate Spartans, 7-2

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- No. 3 Maryland dominated Michigan State, 7-2, Sunday afternoon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The Terrapins (9-1, 3-0 B1G) scored three goals in the first 9:35 of the match and never looked back to win their third straight Big Ten contest.

Six different Terps scored in the victory, led by Hope Rose who scored twice. She leads the Terrapins with 10 goals this season. Riley Donnelly and Emma DeBerdine each notched a goal and an assist in the balanced effort. 

Maryland took 28 shots and allowed Michigan State (4-4, 0-3) just seven. The Terrapins held the Spartans scoreless for the first 55:00 of the match.

Breaking Down The Action
  • The Terps scored three goals in the first 9:35 of the game, jumping out to an early lead.
  • Sophie Klautz struck first for the Terrapins, burying a pass from Donnelly just 1:59 into the match for the early lead.
  • Rose scored her first goal just under 3:00 later, finishing off a pass from DeBerdine from the goal line to give the Terps a 2-0 lead just under 5:00 into the match.
  • Bibi Donraadt scored 9:35 into the match when she brought the ball into the circle from the right side and scored while falling down. Maryland led 3-0 at halftime.
  • DeBerdine scored 3:25 into the third quarter. Hope Rose intercepted the ball near the top of the circle. She brought it close to the cage and sent it across to DeBerdine for the 4-0 lead.
  • Four minutes later, Donnelly scored her first goal of the season when she took a shot from just inside the circle at the top to give the Terps a five-goal lead. 
  • Leah Crouse scored the Terps' sixth goal a minute into the fourth quarter. She drove it into the circle and cracked a hard shot into the bottom right side of the cage.
  • Rose added her second goal with 7:39 to play when she finished off a pass from Belle Bressler from 5 yards out. 
  • Michigan State got on the board twice in the final 4:00. Both goals were scored by Isa van der Weij.
