ON TO THE FINALS: #8 Maryland Rallies Past #5 Rutgers To Advance, 2-1

Box Score ANN ARBOR, MI -- Three-seeded and eighth-ranked Maryland is returning to the Big Ten Field Hockey Championship game for the fifth time in history and first since 2018 after with a 2-1 victory over second-seeded and fifth-ranked Rutgers in the Big Ten Semifinals on Friday afternoon. 

The Terps (16-4) will take on overall No. 1 and top-seeded Northwestern (17-1) on Sunday, Nov. 5 at Noon. That game will air on Big Ten Network. Maryland has won nine of its last 10 games overall surging into the NCAA Tournament next weekend. 

Margot Lawn and Maci Bradford scored fourth-quarter goals for the Terps as they rallied from a 1-0 deficit entering the quarter. The goals came in the final 10 minutes of regulation. 
  In goal, freshman Alyssa Klebasko made five saves for Maryland. 

Rutgers fell to 16-3 and has lost three of its last four games. 


Breaking Down The Action
  • The teams played a scoreless first quarter with the Terps outshot the Scarlet Knights, 3-1. 
  • Neither team was able to crack the scoreboard in the first half as the game was scoreless at halftime. 
  • The third quarter started with a pivotal sequence as Klebasko made a save off a Rutgers' penalty corner to keep the game scoreless. Maryland had its first penalty corner with 10:42 left in the third quarter and they weren't able to find the back of the net. Rutgers broke the scoreless tie as Lucy Bannatyne scored into the lower right corner to put the Scarlet Knights in front with 6:32 left in the third quarter. 
  • Ericka Morris-Adams made a clutch defensive save to keep the Terps within one. Margot Lawn tied the game on a goal with 9:44 left in the fourth on a diving shot from the right side. Then with 5:38 left in the fourth quarter, Maci Bradford scored on a rebound off a scramble from a penalty corner for the game-winner.

Series History
  • The Terps hold a 36-5-1 all-time series lead over the Scarlet Knights, in a series that dates back to 1978.
  • These two programs became conference foes when Maryland joined the Big Ten in 2014. Since then, the Terps have tallied 10 wins and only two losses.
  • Maryland won the only previous Big Ten Tournament meeting, a 3-1 win in the 2016 Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals. 
  • These programs met earlier this season. The Terps fell just shy in Piscataway, falling, 3-2, in a penalty shootout.

  • Maryland is now 14-7 all-time in the Big Ten Tournament winning the 2015 and 2018 Big Ten Tournament titles.
