Terps Extend Home Win Streak With 105-65 Win Over Alcorn State
12/12/2023 7:00:00 PM | Men's Basketball
COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland men's basketball won its 17th home game in a row, dominating Alcorn State, 105-65, on Tuesday at XFINITY Center. Six Terps scored in double-figures, a feat that hasn't occurred since 2018.
The Terps (6-4) have won every home game since last season's match-up in December against UCLA. That marks the second longest home win streak for the Terps since winning 27 straight from Dec. 6, 2014 through Feb. 9, 2016.
Maryland scored 100-plus points for the second game this season, marking the first season since 2010-11 that Maryland hit the century mark twice in a campaign. The Terps scored their most points in a game since beating Longwood, 106-52 on Feb. 9, 2011.
The 40-point margin of victory marked the highest since a 100-58 win over Wingate on Jan. 15, 2021.
Freshman forward Jamie Kaiser, Jr. set a new career-high in points (12) a game removed from setting his previous best of 10 points against Penn State on Dec. 6. Fellow freshman guard Jahnathan Lamothe also recorded a career-high 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor---his big game came on his birthday.
Maryland deployed a balanced and efficient scoring attack throughout the game by scoring effectively in the paint, at the free-throw line and from three-point range.
The Terps excelled with outside shooting to the tune of a season-high 14 three-pointers made. They shot 47% (14-of-30), also a season high. It's the most three-pointers made since hitting 14-of-22 against Northwestern last year on Feb. 26, 2023.
The Terps defense swarmed Alcorn State playmakers, forcing 19 turnovers throughout the contest.
The win was an overall team effort as 10 different Terps logged minutes in the first half with nine of them recording at least two points. The same dynamic continued to the end of the match with the Terps accumulating 44 points from their bench in the contest.
The game was part of Maryland's annual Toys For Tots event where fans brought toys to donate to the local youth community.
Byron Joshua led the way for Alcorn State (1-9) with 14 points.
Coach Willard's Take
"Being at home we've been able to get into a rhythm, we've been able to put a lot of work in [and] we've been able to have some time off. We put a lot of individual work in over the last two weeks. So being at home and getting into a rhythm, I knew it was only a matter of time until we'd start shooting the ball better."
From The Guys
"It's contagious because [for] everybody it's just positive energy," Harris-Smith said about everybody knocking down 3-pointers. "You see your teammate make a shot [and it] just gives you positive energy to step into the next one and knock it down. I feel like we're just being great teammates out there and just playing for each other. I mean, when you do that the ball is gonna go in the hoop."
"They put a lot of work in, young guys just ready to make an impact," Jahmir Young said referring to Kaiser and Lamothe's career day. "They've been working on their game so for them to be able to see their shots falling and for us to be on the sideline cheering for them was great. It was a great team win so couldn't ask for anything better than that."
