CHAPEL HILL, NC –
Amelia Lech, the hero of the Terps' huge win over No. 3 Oklahoma State last weekend in Mexico, came up big once against on Friday in Game 1 of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Lech smashed a two-run home run in the sixth inning to give No. 23 Maryland a 2-1 victory over Virginia on Friday afternoon. Maryland is now 5-1, continuing its best start to a season since the 2012 season, when they started 9-1.
In a pitcher's duel, Trinity Schlotterbeck (3-0) allowed just two hits in tossing her 21st complete game, striking out four -- two in the seventh inning. Lech finally solved Eden Bigham in the sixth inning, as Maryland had just two hits through the first five innings. She also pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts.
Jaeda McFarland and Mackense Greico had the Terps' other hits in the game.

- Virginia took a 1-0 lead as Gabby Baylog stole home plate with two outs.
- After three scoreless innings, Lech blasted that two-run homer to left scoring McFarland – who singled with one out – to give the Terps the 2-1 edge.
- The Cavaliers threatened in the bottom of the seventh as lead-off hitter Tori Gilbert was hit by a pitch. But Schlotterbeck struck out Baylog and forced a fielder's choice for the second out. Schlotterbeck then struck out Kailyn Jones to seal the game.
