Sterling's 15 Saves Lead No. 11 Terps Past Georgetown, 13-4

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- No. 11 Maryland (6-3) scored the first four goals of the game and turned in a defensive masterpiece en route to a dominant 13-4 win over Georgetown (4-5).

"Proud of our team tonight," said head coach Cathy Reese. "I thought we had a few great things to highlight. One, Emily's (Sterling) saves were phenomenal. We put some great defense in front of her and everyone did what we were asking defensively, playing and communicating together really well. Tonight showed what an amazing goalie she is. We were also much better shooting tonight, as far as our eight meters go and in our offense."

Emily Sterling starred in goal for the Terps, making a season-high 15 saves and only allowing four goals for a .789 save percentage, the highest of her career while playing all 60 minutes. Sterling and the rest of the Maryland defense have allowed just four goals in two of Maryland's last three games (William & Mary). The Hoyas scored just once in the second half and went the final 28:07 of game time without a point.

Offensively, Maryland was led by hat tricks from Kori Edmondson (3G, 1A) and Jordyn Lipkin. It marked Edmondson's fourth consecutive game with at least three goals. Additionally, the Terps got two goals from Shannon Smith and a career-best three-assist night from Shaylan Ahearn (1G, 3A).

Breaking Down The Action
  • Maryland scored the first four goals of the game, two each from Lipkin and Edmondson to gain early control.
  • After the Hoyas added one, the Terps scored three straight to make it a 7-1 game early in the second quarter.
  • With 41 seconds remaining in the first half, Edmondson completed her hat trick off an assist from Ahearn, giving Maryland a 9-3 halftime lead.
  • Each side only scored one apiece in the third, as Maryland continued its defensive clinic.
  • Maryland scored the final four goals of the night to claim a 13-4 victory.

Multi-Terps Update
  • Ahearn's three assists were a career-high. It was the first time this season and fourth for her career that Ahearn had multiple assists in a game.
  • Lipkin had her fourth career hat trick as she had one in the season opener against Saint Joe's and two as a freshman in 2022 coming against Duke and Rutgers.
  • Edmondson's three goals marked her fourth consecutive game with a hat trick. She also added an assist.
  • Shannon Smith's two-goal performance was her 14th game as a Terp with multiple points.
