Explosive Fourth Quarter Lifts No. 10 Maryland Past No. 24 Penn, 16-12

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- No. 10 Maryland wrapped up its road non-conference slate with a 16-12 win over No. 24 Penn on Wednesday afternoon at Franklin Field. It marked the fifth straight win for the Terps who now sit at 8-3 on the season. 

The two teams were knotted at 10-10 through three quarters until the Terps exploded for the first six goals of the fourth quarter to take control.

Chrissy Thomas had a career-day for the Terps, totaling seven points off four goals and three assists. Both marks were career-bests for the junior. 

Kori Edmondson scored four goals to notch her sixth consecutive hat trick. Eloise Clevenger notched five total points thanks to two goals and three assists. 


The Terps dominated the draw control, winning 23 of 32 possible attempts. Shaylan Ahearn led the way with 13 draw controls. 

Emily Sterling made 11 saves in goal. 

Breaking Down The Action
  • Thomas scored her first two goals of the day in the first quarter as the two teams ended the first frame tied at 4 apiece. 
  • Maryland scored five of the first seven goals in the second quarter, but Penn scored the final two before halftime to make it a 10-9 Terps' lead at the midway point.
  • Ahearn scored Maryland's lone goal of the third as the two sides went into the final 15 minutes tied at 10-10.
  • Thomas and Edmondson both scored twice to kick off an explosive fourth quarter as the Terps tallied the first six scores of the frame.

  • Ahearn moved to fourth in career draw controls with 13 in the game, giving her 264 in her career. She passed Karri Ellen Johnson, who had 254 from 2008-12. Next on the list is Lizzie Colson, who had 324 from 2017-21.
  • The all-time time draw controls record is held by Taylor Cummings, who had 509 from 2013-16. 
  • Emily Sterling remained eighth in career saves with 11 in the game. She now has 397. Next up is Alexis Venechanos, who had 446 from 2000-03. 
  • The all-time saves record is held by Alex Kahoe, who had 968 from 1997-2000. 

Multi-Terps Update
  • Hannah Leubecker (two goals) had her eighth multi-point game and seventh multi-goal game– in nine games. In her career, she now has 40 multi-point games and 38 multi-goal games, all in 54 career games. 
  • In her freshman season, Edmondson (four goals) has recorded multiple points in each of her last six games with multiple goals and hat tricks in the previous five games. 
  • Clevenger (two goals and three assists) now has eight multi-point, seven multi-assist and three multi-goal games this season in 10 games. In her career, she has 25 multi-point, 17 multi-assist and 15 multi-goal games. 
  • Ahearn (two goals) recorded her ninth career game with multiple goals and third of the season.  
  • Thomas (four goals, three assists) recorded her third multi-point game of the season and of her career. 

Numbers To Know
  • 5: Maryland has now won five consecutive games. 
  • 6: Edmondson has 20 goals and 23 points in her last six games. 
  • 7: Thomas' seven points were a career-best.
