Maryland Posts Third Shutout In Row, Beating Monmouth, 11-0

GREENVILLE, NC — Maryland stayed perfect in the Pirate Invitational, beating Monmouth, 11-0, on Saturday morning. The Terps have won all three games in the event and are now 13-4 overall. Another whole-team effort keyed Maryland's dominant victory in five innings.

With a shutout win, the Terps have posted three consecutive shutouts for the first time since 2012.

Kyra Pittman started in the circle for the first time this season and threw for four impressive innings, retiring eight straight batters across the first three stanzas. The sophomore only allowed one hit as she earned her first career victory. Keira Bucher came in for relief in the fifth to retire three straight.

Amelia Lech smashed her team-leading sixth home run and drove in a career-best five RBIs. Jaeda McFarland hit her first homer of the season, also posting a career-high with four RBIs.

The last time Maryland won three shutouts in a row was from April 15-18, 2012 with an 8-0 win over Virginia and 9-0 and 10-0 wins over Howard.

Breaking Down The Action
  • The Terps wasted no time getting on the board, slapping four hits in a row to begin the bottom of the first inning. After hitting singles, Megan Mikami and Kiley Goff were driven home thanks to RBIs from McFarland and Lech. McFarland then came in to score after a Monmouth fielding error. Lech scored off of a Michaela Jones sacrifice play, putting Maryland's lead at 4-0.
  • Another Mikami single and two hit-by-pitches saw Sammi Woods reach home plate before Lech smashed a grand slam, upping the score to 9-0 going into the third. Lech's bases clearing homer drove in Mikami, Goff, and McFarland.
  • McFarland launched a two-run home run in the fourth, driving in Goff from first. Maryland brought the score to 11-0.
