Washington Scores Late To Beat Terps, 6-5

Box Score CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – Maryland baseball claimed a late lead after Eddie Hacopian delivered a 2-run double with bases loaded to give the Terps a 5-3 lead. However, Washington responded with a three-run home run in the bottom of the eight to put them ahead.
Maryland (5-2) was defeated by Washington (2-3-1), 6-5, on Sunday at Whataburger Field after winning its first two games of the Kleberg Bank College Classic.

The Terrapins had one last opportunity to tie the game with a runner in scoring position in the ninth inning but Washington escaped the jam.

Brayden Martin drove home the other three runs with a bases-clearing double with bases loaded. He finished 2-for-3 with an impressive bunt to keep Maryland alive late. Jacob Orr went 2-for-4 and also hit a double in the game.

Maede Johnson drew his second start of the season and pitched four innings while allowing just three hits and two runs. He also struck out three batters. Garrett French took the mound in relief and gave up one run and struck out three Huskies over two innings of work.

Washington was led by home runs from Aiva Arquette and Blake Wilson.

Breaking Down The Action
  • Washington got runners on second and third and broke the score column in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI groundout to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Kevin Keister walked, Jacob Orr doubled to right-center and Charlie Glennon walked to load the bases for the Terps in the second inning. Brayden Martin cleared the bases with a 3-run double to give the Terps a 3-1 lead.
  • A solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning cut the Terps lead in half, trailing 3-2. Maede Johnson then escaped a bases-loaded jam to prevent further damage.
  • The Huskies continued their power surge in the middle innings with another solo blast to tie it up at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
  • The Dirty Terps loaded the bases in the top of the seventh with a chance to reclaim the lead. Eddie Hacopian came through with a two-RBI single to give Maryland a 5-3 lead.
  • Washington reclaimed the lead with a 3-run home run in the bottom of the eighth to take a 6-5 lead.
Coach Swope's Thoughts
"We have been on the opposite end of a few already", said head coach Matt Swope. "We just gave up too many freebies today and they just cashed in. It was a good baseball game overall, but I didn't think we were good enough offensively. Their starter did a great job of keeping us a little off balance. We knew what he was going to do, but we really couldn't combat it outside of that big first inning thanks in part to that hit by Brayden [Martin]. Like I said it was a pretty good game overall, but it's just tough to lose that one on a Sunday"

Terp Debuts
  • Garrett French took the mound in relief to make his Maryland debut. The transfer from Rutgers pitched two innings and struck out three batters.
Numbers To Know
  • 1: Garrett French appeared in his first game as a Terp.
  • 1: Freshman Brayden Martin had his first career multi-hit game.
  • 2: Martin had his second three-RBI game of the season.
  • 16: Jacob Orr had his 16th multi-hit game of his career.
