Rutgers Outlasts Maryland In Slugfest, 7-6

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland softball lost a back-and-forth game to Rutgers, 7-6, in game one of a doubleheader at Maryland Softball Stadium on Wednesday. It was the second game this season that the Terps hit three or more home runs.

Rutgers (22-16, 6-4 B1G) drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh with a sacrifice fly to center field. Maryland (17-20, 4-6 B1G) had one final chance to send the game to extra innings or secure a walk-off win but couldn't get a runner on base.

Jaeda McFarland went 3-for-4 in the game with a pair of home runs, three runs scored and two RBIs. With two home runs in the game, the fourth-year center-fielder now has a new single-season best for homers with five. McFarland also recorded her 50th career game with multiple hits and 13th game with three or more hits, with four this season.

The game was littered with back-and-forth scoring as McFarland and Diamond Williams hit back-to-back home runs to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the third inning. They occurred after Morgan Smith hit a three-run home run to key a four-run top of the inning for the Scarlet Knights.

Williams finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs. She has a team-leading 13 home runs on the year, which ranks fourth in Maryland program history for a single season.

Courtney Wyche pitched her 14th complete game of the season. She also struck out nine batters.
Smith went 2-for-3 with a game-high five RBIs.

Breaking Down The Action

  • Rutgers loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third. They squeaked out a run on a groundout that nearly resulted in a double-play. The runner barely avoided the tag at home from Delaney Reefe. Morgan Smith then hit a three-run home run to take a 4-2 lead.
