Terps Fall To Rutgers In Big Ten Quarterfinals, 9-8

COLLEGE PARK, MD – No. 3 seed Maryland women's lacrosse was defeated by No. 6 seed Rutgers in the Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals, 9-8, on Saturday at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.  

Rutgers (8-9) jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first quarter but Maryland (12-5) rallied to score the go-ahead goal from Victoria Hensh at 12:19 in the fourth quarter. Maryland's defense also held the Scarlet Knights scoreless for 18:04 through the second and third quarters. But the Scarlet Knights held on and closed out the game while Scarlet Knights goalie Sophia Cardello made several key saves down the stretch. 

  Chrissy Thomas led all scorers with five points, scoring two goals and three assists. Libby May and Hannah Leubecker contributed two goals, and Eloise Clevenger scored a goal and added two assists. 

Meghan Ball matched her Maryland career high with five caused turnovers and picked up three groundballs. Sophie Halus forced two turnovers and picked up three groundballs. Emily Sterling rounded out defensive performers with 10 saves between the pipes. 

Shaylan Ahearn reached 400 career draw control wins in the first quarter and became one of three Terps to ever reach that mark. She finished with a game-high seven wins. 

 
Breaking Down The Action
  • Eloise Clevenger scored the only goal for the Terps in the first quarter, assisted by Chrissy Thomas. Rutgers led 4-1 entering the second.
  • Hannah Leubecker and Libby May scored in the second quarter but the Scarlet Knights added one goal to lead 5-3 at halftime. 
  • Thomas scored twice and May added another in the third. The Terps and Scarlet Knights were tied at 6-6 entering the final frame after Thomas scored with 23 seconds remaining. 
  • Victoria Hensh scored the go-ahead goal at 12:19 in the fourth, but Rutgers added three unanswered goals. Leubecker netted her second of the day to cut the lead to one but the Scarlet Knights closed the game with several stops by their goalie. 
Multi Terps Update
  • Chrissy Thomas (two goals and three assists) had her 21st multi-point game of her career, her 12th game with multiple assists, and her 12th game with multiple goals.
  • Eloise Clevenger (one goal and two assists) had the 50th multi-point game of her career. It was her 35th game with multiple assists.
  • Libby May (two goals) recorded her 64th multi-point game and 57th career game with multiple goals.
  • Hannah Leubecker (two goals) scored multiple points in her 59th career game. It was her 57th game with multiple goals.
Terps On The Charts 
  • Shaylan Ahearn is third in program history with 406 draw-control wins. She added seven to her total on Saturday. Next on the list is Kali Hartshorn (2017-20), who had 421 in her career.
  • Eloise Clevenger is third on the all-time assists list. She had two in the game and has 128 in her career. She's five assists from passing Kelly Amonte (1993-96) and Alex Aust (2010-13), who's tied for second with 132 career assists.
  • Emily Sterling is fourth on the career saves list and added 10 in the game. She now has 657 career saves. Marylynne Morgan (1981-84) is third, with 720 career saves. 
  • Hannah Leubecker is seventh on the career goals list, with 209 goals today. Next on the list is Kelly Coppedge (2001-04), with 219 goals in her career. 
  • Libby May is 10th on the career goals list with 195. She's three goals from passing Brooke Griffin (2011-15) and taking ninth place.
