COLLEGE PARK, MD – After both the Maryland men's and women's basketball teams reached the NCAA Sweet Sixteen, both programs will be honored at Monday's opening day for the Baltimore Orioles. Derik Queen and Julian Reese as well as Shyanne Sellers and Allie Kubek will all throw out first pitches prior to the start of the O's game against the Boston Red Sox (3 PM, MASN).
 
Queen and Reese, both Baltimore natives, led No. 11 Maryland to a 27-9 overall record and a 14-6 mark in the Big Ten. The Terps finished second in the league reaching the Big Ten Semifinals for the first time since 2016. Maryland won its opening round NCAA Tournament games against Grand Canyon and Colorado State to reach the NCAA Sweet Sixteen for the 15th time in program history and the first since 2016 as well.
Sellers and Kubek led No. 18 Maryland to a 25-8 overall record and a 13-5 mark in the Big Ten. The Terps earned their 16th top-four seed to the NCAA Tournament under head coach Brenda Frese and 15th consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. Maryland's Sweet Sixteen appearance was its fourth in the last five years and the 12th under Frese. The Terps defeated Norfolk State and Alabama to reach the regional semifinal in Birmingham, AL. The win over Alabama was it's sixth of the year over a ranked team.
 
The Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Queen set the Maryland record for most single season points by a freshman with 594 points this season. His 16.5 points per game led the Terps and was the second-best scoring average for a freshman in program history. He gained his March Madness moment with the game-winning shot against Colorado State that sent the Terps back to the Sweet Sixteen.
 
Reese finished his four-year career was a dominant force in the Big Ten. He became just the second Terp in program history to record 1,000 career rebounds joining the legendary Len Elmore. Reese concluded his Maryland career with 1,488 points and 1,015 rebounds. He stands second in program history for career rebounds and 20th all-time in career scoring. Reese is also one of just 16 players in program history to have earned all-conference honors three times or more in a career.
Sellers was a three-time All-Big Ten First Team honoree that went to three Sweet Sixteens in her career. She became the first player in program history with 1500 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists. Sellers capped off her 2024-25 season as a WBCA All-America finalist this season.
Kubek, a Cecil County native, started her career at Towson before coming to Maryland. She averaged 15.7 points and 8.3 rebounds during the NCAA Tournament to lead the Terps to the Sweet Sixteen. In her two seasons with Maryland, she has averaged 9.1 points and 4.3 rebounds in 66 total games.
