Volleyball Falls to North Carolina in Four Sets

The Terps were unable to fend off early scoring runs from the Tar Heels in their second loss of the season

CONWAY, SC - Maryland volleyball (0-2) fell to the North Carolina Tar Heels in four sets (25-21, 17-25, 17-25, 17-25) on Saturday afternoon. 

Ajack Malual led the Terps with 16 kills, while Haley Melby chipped in with 10. Ally Williams led Maryland with 10 of the Terps' 32 total digs. The Terps battled in all four sets, but fell behind in the final three sets and were unable to rally, posting three straight 25-17 set losses to close out their weekend. 

How it Happened: 
Set 1:
  • The Terps started off with a quick 2-0 start after an attack error and a kill by Haley Melby. 
  • Sydney Bryant's first kill of the day tied the game at 8-8.
  • Another kill by Melby tied the first set at 12.
  • A 3-0 run for the Terps put them ahead 18-16. 
  • Another run for Maryland pushed the lead to 22-18.
  • A kill from Eva Rohrback finished off the 25-21 Set 1 win for Maryland.
Set 2:
  • Rohrbach's first kill of set two tied the game at 2-2.
  • Back-to-back kills from Malual & Bryant tied the set at 8 and 9, respectively. 
  • UNC utilized a 2-0 run to open up a 15-12 lead in the second set.
  • Back-to-back blocks by the Terps made it 14-18. 
  • 5-0 run by UNC made it 22-15.
  • Back-to-back kills from UNC's Safi Hampton gave the Tar Heels a 25-17 win in the second set.
Set 3: 
  • Both teams traded points to open the set but UNC's quick 4-0 run put the Tarheels ahead 4-1.  
  • A service ace and a kill by Lilly Wagner brought Maryland to within 4, 5-9.
  • A 2-0 run for Maryland made it 9-13. 
  • UNC controlled set three as a 7-0 run made it 20-14. 
  • A timeout by UNC sparked a Tarheel 5-0 run to win the third set 25-17.
Set 4: 
  • The 8th kill of the day for Haley Melby made it 1-2 to start the fourth.
  • A 4-0 run by UNC made it 6-1, prompting a Maryland timeout. 
  • Malual's 14th kill of the day brought Maryland within four, 6-10. 
  • A 3-0 run for North Carolina extended its lead to 15-10. 
  • Back-to-back kills for the Terps made it 13-17.
  • Five straight points for UNC made it 24-14. 
  • UNC took the fifth set 25-17.
