Box Score

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Tiffany Brown matched a season-high with 21 points for the second straight game, and March? Strickland and Deedee Warley added 20 and 16 points, respectively, as Maryland raced to a consolation victory in the Gatorade Hurricane Holiday Classic, 98-47 over Brown University. Maryland's scoring and 51-point margin of victory were the most by the Terrapins since a 102-31 win over Maryland- Eastern Shore on Dec. 28, 1993.

After falling to eventual tournament champion and defending WAC champ SMU in the tournament's opening round, Maryland (8-3) leaped to a 29-8 lead over the Bears with just 10 minutes gone in the first half. The Terrapins coasted to a 51-26 halftime margin on the strength of 16 points apiece by Strickland and Warley. Brown and Strickland each had three 3-pointers by the intermission and the Terps' pressure had forced 22 turnovers with 12 steals.

Defensive pressure and Maryland's transition game told the entire story of the game. Overall, Maryland turned 37 Brown turnovers into 46 points. Maryland registered 23 steals including a career-high six by Tiffany Brown who was the Terps' lone representative on the all-tournament team. In two tournament games, Maryland's ball-hawking defense recorded 40 steals and forced 67 turnovers.

The Bears (4-6) held a 19-14 rebounding edge at halftime, but foul trouble helped the Terps to a 30-17 second-half rebounding advantage as Maryland's bench extended the lead. Key to the second half surge was a six-minute stretch in which Maryland held the Bears without a field goal, going on a 14-4 run to extend the lead to 69-36. The Terps outscored Brown 29-11 the rest of the way with significant contributions from freshmen Terri Daniels and Renneika Razor. Daniels finished with seven points and six assists while Razor had six points and a team-high nine rebounds. Fellow freshman Vicki Brick finished with seven points, eight assists and four steals.

Brown's Barbara Maloni and Brianna Brown each finished with nine points. Rachel MacDonald had seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Maryland returns to College Park and action in the Atlantic Coast Conference with the Terrapins host defending NCAA finalist Duke on Monday, Jan. 3. Tipoff is 7:30 at Cole Field House.
