James Franklin, who has spent the past two seasons on the coaching staff at Idaho State, has been named wide receivers coach at the University of Maryland, head coach Ron Vanderlinden announced Thursday.
Franklin, 28, also has coached at Washington State, James Madison, and East Stroudsburg .
This past season, he oversaw a Idaho State unit that amassed 29 touchdowns, 258 receptions and more than 3,300 receiving yards. Franklin joined the Idaho State staff prior to the 1998 season after serving one season as an assistant coach at Washington State University, where he worked primarily with the tight ends. Prior to his stint at WSU, Franklin spent one season coaching the wide receivers at James Madison University. In 1998, he spent time coaching with the Miami Dolphins, working with Joel Collier and Kippy Brown as an assistant running backs coach in the National Football League's minority internship program.
During his career, he has recruited the Maryland-Virginia area, as well as New York, Pennsylvania, New England, the Midwest and California.
Franklin is a 1995 graduate of East Stroudsburg, where he was a Harlon Hill candidate for Division II Player of the Year. At ESU, he was a two-time Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference selection, earning team MVP honors his senior season. He also served as president of the Student Athletic Advisory Council, and was honored by Sports Illustrated as its national Player of the Week during October, 1994. He received his master's degree from Washington State in 1999.
