Five Maryland Football Players Sign NFL Free Agent Deals

April 24, 2000

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - One week after the conclusion of last week's NFL draft, seven Maryland players from the 1999 Terrapin football team have wound their way into upcoming NFL preseason minicamps.

Chosen in the 2000 NFL draft from Maryland were junior cornerback Lewis Sanders (Staten Island, N.Y.) and senior nose tackle Delbert Cowsette (Cleveland, Ohio). Sanders was a fourth-round selection of the Cleveland Browns while Cowsette was taken in the seventh round by the Washington Redskins.

Joining the pair of draft picks, though, are five Terps inked to free agent deals in the past week --- wide receiver Jermaine Arrington (Landover, Md.) with the San Francisco 49ers, cornerback Renard Cox (Richmond, Va.) with the Arizona Cardinals, offensive tackle Brad Messina (Bogota, N.J.) with the Washington Redskins, tight end John Waerig (Philadelphia, Pa.) with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and offensive guard Jamie Wu (St. Charles, Ill.) with the Atlanta Falcons.

The Terps' seven players entering summer camps with NFL teams is up from five Terrapins off the 1998 team --- Eric Barton (Oakland Raiders), Kendall Ogle (Cleveland Browns), Cliff Crosby (St. Louis Rams), John Feugill (Arizona Cardinals) and Rasheed Simmons (N.Y. Giants). Of those five, Barton and Ogle were the only players to see time as NFL rookies in 1999. Feugill is now with Jacksonville.
