TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Junior Vanessa Jones (Fort Olney, Md.) continued her recent domination
in the high jump, winning again with a leap of 6-0 1/2 to lead the Maryland track teams at
the Seminole Twilight meet on Saturday.
Jones won for the fourth time during the outdoor season, including a victory at the ACC
Championships. Her mark of 6-0 1/2 tied for the fifth-best collegiate mark in the country
this season and improved her NCAA provisional qualifying mark. The automatic mark is
6-0 3/4.
Also faring well for the women was sophomore Thema Napier (Columbia, Md.), who placed
second in the 400 hurdles with a time of 59.49. In addition, freshman Tia Burley (Baltimore, Md.)
finished third in both the 200 meters (24.13) and the 400 meters (53.98). Both times were
personal records for Burley, with the latter improving her previous best (54.50) by over half
a second.
On the men's side, senior Jason Joubert (Rockville, Md.) shattered his PR in the 400 hurdles
by finishing second with a time of 51.54. Joubert's previous best was 51.92. Senior John Carr
(Washington, D.C.) finished third in the 100 with a time of 10.71, and junior Cedrick Rogers
(Fort Wayne, Ind.) placed third in the long jump with a leap of 22-11 3/4.
In addition, sophomore Dontae Bugg (Newport News, Va.) took fifth in the 110 hurdles
with a time of 14.50, a personal record, and sophomore Phillip Barrett (Upper Marlboro, Md.)
placed sixth in the same event with a time of 14.72.
The meet marked the final competition of the regular season. Athletes who have qualified
will participate in the Eastern Colleges Athletic Conference (ECAC, women) Championships
or the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur American Athletes (IC4A, men) Championships on
May 18-21.
