Terps' Women's Track And Field Team Finish Sixth At ECAC Championships

PRINCETON, NJ - Senior All-American Candyce DeLoatch (Pittsgrove, N.J.) finished second in the 400-meter dash and anchored the Terps' 4X400-meter relay team to a second-place finish in leading the Maryland women's track and field team to a sixth place finish at the ECAC/IC4A championships at William Weaver Stadium at Princeton University. Maryland finished as the highest-ranking ACC team with 39 total points during the four-day meet.

DeLoatch, who will compete in the NCAA championship next week in Boise, Idaho, ran her third best time of the spring season in placing second and earning eight points toward the Terps' team total. She finished only 25 one-hundredths of a second behind the winner, Carron Allen of Georgetown.

DeLoatch then ran the lead leg on Maryland's 4X100-meter relay team that finished in second place. She teamed with Tia Burley (Baltimore, Md.), Lynn Harris (Newark, Del.) and Thema Napier (Columbia, Md.) to finish in a time of 46.39.

DeLoatch than anchored the Terps' 4X400-meter relay that finished fifth in Sunday's final. She teamed with Burley, Napier and Dionne Hamilton (Hampton, Va.) to gain eight team points.

Napier also scored points in two individual events. She finished fifth in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in a time of 1:01.31 and eighth in the 100-meter high hurdles in a time of 14.47.

In addition to her pair of top finishes on the relay teams, Burley finished fifth in the 200-meter dash in a time of 24.22. Her time on Sunday was only nine tenths of a second off of her season best.

On the men's side, senior John Carr (Washington, D.C) finished eighth in the finals of the 100- meter dash.
