COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
University of Maryland head women's basketball coach Chris Weller is pleased to announce the signing of Anesia Smith (Alexandria, Va.) to a national letter of intent. Smith averaged 20 pts., 4 rebs., 3 steals and shot over 80 percent from the free throw line, leading Hayfield High School to a 21-7 finish and taking the team to the Northern Regional Tournament for the first time in school history. It was also the school's first appearance in the Group AAA state tournament.
"Anesia is the type of explosive guard who will mesh quickly with the current roster of athletic Maryland Terrapins," said Weller. "She brings a winning personality and an intense competitor's attitude. Her versatility at the guard position will enhance our full court game on both ends of the floor."
A top 100 player in this year's class, Smith was considered to be one of the best unsigned players heading into the spring signing period.
"They got an impact player there (in Anesia Smith)," said Bret McCormick, the Director of Scouting for the All-Star Girls' report. "She's very athletic and a very good 3-pt. Shooter. She has the ability to impact the program as early as next season."
Smith will join the Terrapins in 2001-02. This year, the Terps finished with a 17-12 record and received it's 16th national tournament bid in the history of the program.
