COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The University of Maryland women's lacrosse team jumped out early and never looked back against 12th-ranked James Madison, beating the Dukes, 16-6, today on a sunny day in College Park.
Maryland's win was its 10th in as many games this year and 30th-in-a-row overall dating back to last season. That streak is the team's longest since running off 50 straight from 1995-97.
The Terps (10-0, 3-0 ACC) got out quickly in both halves, but particularly so in the first. Just 22 seconds from the opening draw, Maryland held a 2-0 lead after goals by Tori Wellington (29:46) and Courtney Hobbs (29:38). For Hobbs, it was a continuation of a recent string of strong play as she wrapped up a hat trick and three of the Terrapins' first four goals before 10 minutes had elapsed in the half.
Hobbs' Australian cohort, Jen Adams, picked it up from there and notched a hat trick of her own in the first half as Maryland outscored JMU 9-3 in the opening frame.
The second half again saw the Terps come out strong as they posted the first five goals after intermission and counted on sophomore goalie Alexis Venechanos and a stingy defense to seal the victory. Venechanos had her second straight strong outing as she made seven assists while allowing just the six goals.
In the end, Adams led all scorers with nine points (six goals, three assists) making it 43 points in her last six games. Hobbs' hat trick gives her three straight games with at least three goals and Allison Comito added five points on a pair of goals and three assists.
Maryland now begins a stretch of three games in five days beginning on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. against William & Mary in College Park. All three games are against Top 20 competition and against local rivals as the Terps will play at Georgetown and then at home against Johns Hopkins after squaring off with the Tribe.
