Jones Qualifies For NCAA Track & Field Championships

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland senior high jumper Vanessa Jones (Olney, Md.) was selected to represent the Terrapins in her event at the 2001 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, announced late Thursday evening. The All-ACC and ECAC All-Region performer will cap her accomplished four-year Terp career on June 2 at 4:30 p.m. PT at the University of Oregon's campus in Eugene.

Jones makes her second career appearance in the NCAA outdoor meet after being the 20th-rated high-jumper in the nation during her senior season. Her spring high of 5-10 ľ" at the ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships bested the NCAA provisional qualifying height of 5-10 ˝".

Jones' all-time outdoor high stands at 6-0 ˝", achieved at the 2000 Seminole Twilight Meet.

A season ago as a junior, Jones was the ACC outdoor and ECAC indoor high jump champion and qualified for both the indoor and outdoor national meets. The standout finished in 17th place at the 2000 NCAA outdoor championships.

Serving as one of the 2001 track & field team captains, Jones was recently honored with the Maryland M Club's James Kehoe Award, given to the senior student-athlete that has "symbolized the commitment, dedication, spirit and will to win" during his or her senior season. The chemistry major and 2000 Olympic Trials finalist is a recipient of conference and ECAC citations for her efforts in both the indoor and outdoor track & field seasons this year.
