SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The University of Maryland women's lacrosse team returned to form with an important 15-11 win over Syracuse University at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. The fifth-ranked Terps are now 1-2 on the season while the loss is the No. 7 Orangewomen's first in three games this season.

The Terrapins used their most complete team effort of the season to move out in front of Syracuse, stave off a late challenge and ultimately pull away in an impressive win. Maryland was led in scoring by senior Courtney Hobbs, who scored a career-high five goals and added an assist in the win. Other notables in the game included a career-high three assists for fellow senior Meredith Egan (who also had a pair of goals) and a career-high tying 14 saves by junior Alexis Venechanos.

The game opened with Syracuse getting on the board first (as each team has against the Terps this year), but Maryland charged back to score four straight and five of the last six of the half to own a 5-2 halftime lead. New York native Kristie Leggio (Bay Shore) had a pair of goals to lead the first half charge, her first career multiple-goal performance.

The second half began as the first ended -- with Maryland in control. Hobbs scored a pair of goals in the first four minutes and the Terrapins owned a commanding 7-2 lead. To its credit, however, Syracuse did not go down quietly.

The Orangewomen scored eight of the game's next 10 goals (including four-in-a-row at one point) to take a 10-9 lead with 13:54 left. Hobbs then scored her fourth goal of the day to tie the score and sophomore Kelly Coppedge got on the board with a pair of goals before SU could answer. With 5:01 remaining, Hobbs scored again to put Maryland up 13-11, the Terps won the ensuing draw, and played the slow down game to perfection. In the final three minutes, the Terrapins salted the game away with crisp passing in the Syracuse end and, ultimately, a pair of goals which came after Syracuse players vacated their goal in an effort to get the ball back.

Maryland returns to action this Tuesday in its home opener against Atlantic Coast Conference foe Virginia at Ludwig Field. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
