ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - A strong performance was not enough for the Bonnies to overcome Maryland on Friday night at the Reilly Center, as they fell 57-65.
Down 26-41 with 17:46 remaining, the Bonnies mounted a 9-2 run to cut into Maryland's lead. Junior guard Stefanie Collins drained three consecutive three-point baskets to cut the lead to 35-43 at the 13:53 mark.
Freshman forward Audrey Latendresse hit a lay up to bring the Bonnies within six with 6:55 remaing, 44-50. Maryland's defense would not let the Bonnies any closer.
With the Bonnies within reach, down 55-63 with 1:24 remaining, the Terrapins blocked two key shots to seal the victory.
Behind three three-point buckets from Alli Spence, the Terrapins jumped out to a quick 18-7 lead over the first ten minutes of play. The Bonnies countered with an 8-5 run beginning with a shot from Collins at the 10:14 mark, brining the score to 17-23 with 5:08 remaining in the first half.
For the fourth straight game, Collins led the Bonnies in scoring. Collins, who made four from behind the arc, finished the game with 14 points.
Senior guard Lyndsey Maurer was the only other St. Bonaventure player in double figures with 13 points, nine of which came in the second half. Maurer also snagged a team-high two steals to go with three rebounds and two assists.
Sophomore guard Shannon Bodamer finished the game with nine points and pulled down three rebounds, while senior forward Jade Humble chipped in eight points.
Spence led the Terrapins with a game-high 19 points, while Chrissy Fisher finished with 12 rebounds.
St. Bonaventure shot 42 percent from the field (18-43), including 6-12 from three-point range, while Maryland outrebounded the Bonnies 31-18.
The loss drops the Bonnies to 1-3 on the season, while Maryland improves to 5-1.
The Bonnies return to action on Sunday, Dec. 7 at the Reilly Center to take on St. Francis (N.Y.) at noon.
