CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The University of Maryland men's tennis team lost to No. 30 Virginia Wednesday and saw its record drop to 9-8. Sophomore David Reichsfeld lost in a tough three-set battle to UVA's Darrin Cohen, 6-2, 3-6, 10-5.
Freshman Pierre Rudder lost at No. 1 singles to No. 42-ranked Doug Stewart, 6-2, 6-2. Senior Chris Chiu and sophomore Troy Demers also were defeated in straight sets by their Cavalier opponents at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively.
Maryland's doubles tandem of Chiu and Demers came close to pulling out a win at No. 1 doubles. However, the UVa duo of Gonyer and Nolen pulled out the victory, 9-8. Both of the other doubles teams, comprised of senior Greg Chambers and Rudder at No. 2 doubles and Reichsfeld and freshman Scott Peters at No. 3 doubles, lost by the score of 8-3.
The Terps will regroup and travel to Raleigh, N.C., to take on NC State on April 6. Last season, the Terps clinched their first ACC victory in 10 years when they defeated the Wolfpack, 4-3.
