Maryland Men's Tennis Notches Tenth Win For First Time Since 1992

April 9, 2003
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland men's tennis got back to winning ways Wednesday at the Tennis Center at College Park, defeating Mount St. Mary's 7-0. In a quick match lasting just over two hours, all the Terps found success on the court, hitting their way to a 10-9 (0-6 ACC) record on the season. With the win against the Mount, the Terps' win column bears double digits for the first time since 1992, when the Terps had 11 wins during head coach Jim Laitta's second season at Maryland.
Doubles play saw all three Terp teams victorious. Chris Chiu (Columbia, Md.) and Troy Demers (Annapolis, Md.) matched up against Phil Holliday and Drew Arbeiter of the Mount and defeated them 8-4 in the match up of the No. 1 seeds. This win makes for the Terp tandem's second straight win together. Their last victory came against NC State on April 6, marking the first ACC victory for the duo.
David Reichsfeld (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) and Scott Peters (Hopkinton, Ma) teamed up and blanked Adam Lah and Bob Cozzillio, 8-0 in the quickest doubles match of the afternoon.
To close out doubles for the afternoon, freshmen Pierre Rudder (Port of Spain, Trinidad) and Rory Theis (Bloomington, Minn.) got the job done at the No. 3 doubles spot, defeating Jeff Lamberton and Paul Stuart, 8-4.
Maryland carried the feeling of triumph into singles action. Pierre Rudder, Chris Chiu, Troy Demers, and Scott Peters only allowed their opponents one set on their way to victory.
David Reichsfeld defeated Bob Cozzillio, 6-3, 6-0, improving to 14-5, which is the team's best record.
Scott Baxter closed out the rainy afternoon in College Park with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jeff Lamberton. March 19 was the last time that Baxter appeared in the singles lineup, notching a win against Coppin State.
The Terps will host conference opponent North Carolina, Friday, April 11. The match which was originally scheduled to be played February 15, was postponed due to inclement weather. The Terps will square off against the Tar Heels at 2:00 p.m.
