The University of Maryland men's tennis team concluded its regular season with a 7-0 loss to fifth-ranked Duke University, Saturday, at the Tennis Center at College Park. The Terrapins finished their 2004 spring schedule with an 8-9 mark, 0-8 in the ACC.
The Blue Devils out matched the Terps in doubles and singles action not allowing the Terrapins a single set.
Duke's No. 16-ranked doubles team of Stokke and King defeated Ian Bliss (Plainview, N.Y.) and Scott Peters (Hopkinton, Mass.) 8-3 in the top doubles spot. The team doubles point went to the Blue Devils, when Amritraj and Rodrigues won 8-2 over Maryland's Chase Dawson (Timonium, Md.) and Rory Theis (Bloomington, Minn.). Duke completed the sweep as Shults and Zimmermann downed Troy Demers (Annapolis, Md.) and David Reichsfeld (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) in the No. 3 doubles spot.
In the top singles position, Maryland's Scott Peters was defeated 6-3, 6-0 by fifth-ranked Phillip King. Demers, the Terps junior co-captain was defeated in straight-sets by No. 123 Peter Rodrigues, 6-2, 6-4.
Last time out against Virginia, Terp junior Ian Bliss won in the No. 3 singles position to claim his first conference victory of the season. Bliss could not repeat Wednesday's performance as he lost to Jason Zimmermann, 6-1, 6-0.
Freshmen Scott Fink and John O'Rourke were defeated by Jonathan Stokke and Christopher Brown, in spots four and five respectively. Both matches were 6-2, 6-2 wins in the Blue Devils favor.
Also winning 6-2, 6-2 was Duke's Peter Shultz. He defeated Maryland's junior co-captain David Reichsfeld in the No. 6 position to complete the sweep for Duke.
Maryland finished ninth in the conference and will face the No. 8 seed, Thursday, April 15 at 3 p.m. in the ACC tournament. The championship will be held at the Millbrook Exchange Tennis Center in Raleigh.
