COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The women's tennis and men's cross country teams earned the top honors Sunday at the eighth annual President's Cup Luncheon, honoring academic excellence and community service by University of Maryland student-athletes.

The women's tennis team won its first President's Cup Team Award, while the men's cross country squad was a repeat winner. The awards are given to the men's and women's teams with the highest overall cumulative combined grade-point average for the prior two semesters. The women's tennis team posted a 3.41 combined GPA, with men's cross country at 3.11.

Team awards were also given as part of the CHAMPS/Lifeskills program to the teams that have best adopted the five commitments of the NCAA's Lifeskills program: academic excellence, athletic excellence, commitment to career development, commitment to personal development and commitment to service. The women's gymnastics and football teams won those awards.

Student-athletes also won various academic and community service awards given by the University, by the M Club and by the Atlantic Coast Conference. The event, held at the campus Inn and Conference Center, was sponsored by the M Club, the organization comprised of previous Terrapin letter winners.
