COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland competitive cheer team will compete on Saturday at the Maryland Cup in the Show Place Arena. This competition brings 150 teams together in one day to show off their routines. This is Maryland's first major cheer competition of the season and they are looking forward to showing off the finishing touches they have made on their own routine.
The final version of this seasons routine boasts Mimi Cuff and Valerie Town doing full basket tosses and ten standing handspring fulls. The tumbling sequence is now complete with five double fulls.
Katie Tomasello returns this weekend from a finger injury and will play an integral role in the squad's tumbling. Freshman flyer, Jackie de los Santos, will be one of the main flyers this competition. Coach Lura Fleece has given her a leading position for the first time as a result of outstanding performance at practice. "We feel she is ready to have a bigger part in the routine, " Fleece commented. Captains Tocarra Hillard and Jen Carr continue to be key leaders in pushing the morale of the team in a positive direction.
The team is looking at this weekend as a breakout competition. From now until Nationals the routine will continue to grow in difficulty while striving to maintain cleanliness and energy.
